Napoles ordered to be transferred to regular jail

Camille Diola - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Suspected pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim Napoles will be transferred from Fort Sto. Domingo's special detention facility to Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig.

The Sandiganbayan Third Division on Friday ordered Napoles to be detained "immediately" to the female dorm under the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.

The order stemmed from a request from the prosecution panel of the Office of the Ombudsman requesting the court to have the plunder respondent be transferred to a regular jail.

In ordering the transfer, the anti-graft court rejected Napoles' plea not to have her detained in city jail, where her camp said her life would be at risk.

The prosecution, however, argued that Napoles should be detained in a facility near the Sandiganbayan, where she faces three counts of plunder.

Napoles has been detained in Fort Sto. Domingo in Laguna since September 2013 and briefly stayed at the Ospital ng Makati for a surgery in March.

Napoles surrendered to Malacañang in August 2013 as a suspect in a serious illegal detention case filed by scam whistleblower Benhur Luy.
