Congress urged to revisit salary standardization law
MANILA, Philippines - Vice President Jejomar Binay urged Congress yesterday to revisit the provisions of the salary standardization law.
Binay said it is about time to revisit the law to allow employees of local government units additional benefits.
He said government employees are lagging behind employees of the private sector in terms of salaries and benefits.
“The last Congress was not able to pass the proposed bill to revisit the standardization. Even on that note, I asked Senator Nancy Binay if she can push to revisit the standardization law,†he said. “The government is always behind the private sector which has higher salaries, they have many benefits.â€
Binay said there are local government units like Makati City capable of giving additional salaries and benefits.
“The law needs to be amended. The standardization law means standardization of pay. This is in the entire Philippines,†Binay said.
Binay cited that for a time, the Land Bank of the Philippines got an exemption.
Binay also proposed to make barangay officials and workers regular government employees to give them regular salaries.
“If you will ask the barangay captains, they will say that they are employees of the Philippines. But during the campaign period, I told them that unfortunately they are not included in the category of employee because they are not members of Pag-ibig, GSIS and PhilHealth. The membership in these institutions is mandatory,†he said.
