The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - The Philippines received reports of 448 new HIV cases in January this year, up 18 percent over a year earlier, the Department of Health said today.

The new cases brought the total number of HIV and AIDS cases to 16,964 since 1984 when it started documenting such cases, the health authority said.

The registry showed that 57 of them were AIDS cases at the time of reporting. The patients in seven cases were dead.

The health authority said the highest number of deaths occurred in the 25-29 age group, accounting for 57 percent, followed by the 20-24 age group, 30-34 group and the 50 and older group.

The annual number of deaths from 1984 to 2010 ranged from two to 36 with an average of 14 deaths per year. But starting from 2011, there has been an increase in the number of recorded deaths, from 69 to 177 in 2012 and 223 in 2013.
