'Noy won't date Pamela, but Sec. Alcala will'

Louis Bacani - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - It seems that there won't be a date between President Benigno Aquino III and former Baywatch beauty Pamela Anderson anytime soon.

Anderson, a former star of the television series Baywatch, had sent a letter to Aquino, asking him to have dinner with her to discuss the transfer of the elephant Mali to a sanctuary in Thailand.

"Pamela Anderson is in L.A. and the President is not going to L.A. anytime soon," Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said.

Lacierda said the issue regarding the elephant has already been delegated to Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala.

"We will just ask Secretary Alcala what the decision will be," said Lacierda.

“Secretary Alcala will be all too willing to meet with Pamela Anderson,” he jokingly said.

Anderson is a member of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which has long been campaigning for the welfare of the elephant, an attraction at the Manila Zoo.

“I know that the Philippines is a great nation, and I hope you’ll help Mali by moving her to a sanctuary as soon as possible. If you find yourself in LA in the near future perhaps we can discuss this important matter over dinner,” Anderson said in her letter.

PETA said Mali is likely to die young considering her conditions at the Manila Zoo.

"The best way to save her life is to send her to a place that provides proper vet care and is more like an elephant’s natural habitat. Transferring elephants is safe and routine,” the group said.
