Malaysian forces fire at Kiram's men in Sabah

MANILA, Philippines - Malaysian security forces fired at the royal army of the Sultanate of Sulu on Friday morning, a spokesperson of Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III said.

Sultan Kiram has denied an earlier report by radio dzMM that several people were killed during the attack.

Assistant Secretary Raul Hernandez, spokesperson of the Department of Foreign Affairs, said that Malaysian Ambassador to the Philippines Dato Mohd Zamri Mohd Kassim confirmed that gunshots were fired in Lahad Datu, where the royal army of the sultanate is holed up.

Hernandez said Kassim did not say which group fired the shots. He added that the ambassador also clarified that there were no casualties in the incident.

"There were no casualties and that the firing had already stopped," Hernandez said, quoting Kassim's report to Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario.

Abraham Idjirani, secretary general and spokesman to Sultan Kiram, also confirmed that the group Raja Muda (Crown Prince) Agbimuddin Kiram were fired at by Malaysian security forces before holding a briefing in Manila.

Idjirani said that the royal army called them up and informed the rising tension at about 6 a.m.

“This morning is a history, the Malaysian security forces started the first shot,” Idjirani said.

Idjirani said that Agbimuddin was not sure if the first shot was aimed at their people.

He added that Agbiuddin also informed them earlier that the Malaysian authorities were already approaching their area.

“However, there was bit of respite and it was good that the Malaysian police have withdrawn later, according to Raja Muda,” Idjirani said.

He said the Malaysian forces came as close as 300 meters from where the more than 200 followers of the sultanate were holed up.

The sultanate official also appealed to the Malaysian government to reconsider its action stressing their people holed up in Lahad Datu have no intentions of creating trouble.

“However, if the Malaysian authorities will push for its action then the Sultanate followers there have no recourse but to defend themselves to their last breath,” Idjirani said. with reports from Jaime Laude and Camille Diola

Hopefully some cool heads in malaysia will prevail over their gun-happy countrymen. This is a war against Filipino muslims that malaysia will find hard to justify in the long run.

It might be the stain on the underwear of Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle. The candidates are lined up wearing only their underwear and are each individually asked the deciding question after being brought to the pro-council. “How do you feel about Muslims?” The improvements of the economy from poverty in need of perpetual financial aid from the Mother Church to more donations going back to the Vatican will give him a chance and so will youth. Who can take care of the church in the next several decades? I am sure the potential war zone at the Philippines will be an issue and how will it affect the Roman Catholic Church, if Cardinal Tagle is selected. The EU economy on a down slide could have been a pressure sentiment to resign, but we probably will not know the truth until the butler writes a controversial book and it is paraphrased on CNN and BBC and Al Jazeera and FOX News.

The Cardinal and priests don't have underwear. Same is true with the nuns. Nobody knows if they wear or not anyway.

Every fallen Tausog brother will carry with him 5 Malaysian soldier. Inshah Allah!

baka NANAY mu SIYA hahahahahahahaha

I don't know if this is official but 10 isn't the right figure ,it is 12 and 2 Malaysian died on the shootout. and Agbimuddin Kiram was address on the international paper as self proclaimed Sultan meaning . the Malaysian government does not recognized him as a royalty. Not a good news to the Royalty of Sulu and the Philippines in general.

The number of those killed is immaterial. Whether 10 or 2 were killed, one thing is certain there were those who were killed. A life is important regardless of religion.

with this event the LP is in big trouble in Mindanao. we won't know how this will translate. but this is tragic and very sad for our muslim brothers.

Let us watch and see, now that the precious Tausog blood was spilled in Sabah, the land that they claim as their own. Definitely, the situation now becomes more complicated. It is likely that it will affect the incoming election in Malaysia, the ongoing peace negotiation of the govt and the MILF since the Malaysian forces currently in Mindanao could possibly be a target of retaliation, and the current security situation in Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi where majority are Tausug and where there is strong presence and influence of MNLF, and still recognize the Sultanate of Sulu as their traditional leader. I remember in the early 1970s, the intense fighting then in Mindanao could have been solved earlier if the Sultan in Maguindanao, Maranao, and Tausug public appealed to their subjects to end the hostilities. In 1973, we experienced peace in Buluan and its adjacents areas when we got the commitment and assurance of Late the Datu Mangilin. When we cleared Buldon in 1974, we asked the commitment of then Mayor Datu Aratuk to tell the rebel in the area not to interfer with our operation but he did not commit; hence we had to capture Buldon by fighting it out. Likewise, after we libearted Carmen town in 1974 from MNLF that completely burned the whole town except for the municipal and buildings and few houses. Our battalion commander then also asked the commitment of the late Sultan Ugtug Matalam to appeal to his people to stop attacking christian communities but he did not commit either. While we fought in Central Mindanao almost everyday except Sunday, we never sustained casualties of more than 4 dead soldiers in a day. It was only in Sulu that we experienced a casualty of about 20 dead in a day. The Tausug is the most valiant and courageous among the muslim tribe. They defend their ground every breath of their life. That's the reason why until now Basilan and Sulu is still a problem. I do hope and pray that how they value Sulu as their homeland will not be the same on how the value Sabah. Otherwise, our government and Malaysia is in with a very serious problem. Best wishes to leaders.

It's more believable that the Malaysian Force fired first not the Royal Force. The Sultan's men were outnumbered and outgunned. How could they be the first ones to fire?
