Review: Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge

MANILA, Philippines — Samsung unveiled two new flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge at its Unpacked 2015 event in Barcelona on Monday.

Veering away from its tried and tested plastic smartphones, the Korean tech giant instead focused on building premium looking phones.

Both the S6 and S6 Edge feature glass front and back panels with an aluminum trim and chassis. The S6 Edge, the more innovative of the two, sports a display that curves into the sides of the phone, reminiscent of an infinity pool.

The new design direction follows Samsung's missing 2014 sales targets, having finished second to Apple in the fourth quarter of 2014.

Samsung CEO JK Shin said, "By listening to our customers, and learning from both our success and missteps, we continuously push forward new technologies and ideas."

The S6 and the S6 Edge were designed from the ground up with a new focus on both design and performance.

The 5.1-inch smartphone is lighter and thinner than its predecessor but is more powerful and energy efficient. The phone runs on Samsung's own Exynos 7 Octa processor, 3GB of RAM and sports a quad HD display with a pixel density of 577 ppi.

Some of the S6's new features include built-in fast wireless charging, an even better 16-megapixedl camera with a f/1.9 lens, and a redesigned fingerprint scanner. It also supports Samsung's new mobile payment service Samsung Pay.

In the Philippines the S6 will be a dual-SIM phone (one LTE one GSM - both nano SIM). Samsung has not yet released pricing data but expect the S6 edge to be more expensive than the S6.

Global availability is set for April 2015.
