Light in the midst of darkness

Corruption is not a victimless crime.

Businessmen suffer because there is no level playing field. Foreign investment slows down. Higher taxes do not necessarily result in better government services and infrastructure works.

Corruption deprives. It benefits only a few. It makes the poor poorer. People die because of corruption. It demeans all of us.

EDITORIAL - Persona non grata

A manifesto signed last Friday by most of Cebu's political leaders branded Rep. Clavel Martinez of the 4th district as a "persona non grata" for claiming that there was massive cheating in Cebu in the May 2004 elections and that she had an audio CD to prove it.

GMA resign: The cry of the sore losers!

For our special guest on tonight's talkshow on Straight from the Sky, we have with us, Cebu City's only elected woman councilor, the honorable Joy Pesquera, who gives us an insight of the workings of the Cebu City Council especially with the current issues happening in Cebu City today. Councilor Pesquera also gives us her views as to the current political turmoil happening in this country from a political woman's perspective... after all, this political turmoil seems to be directed against Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who is also a woman.

A very sad day for the Philippine Senate

I must confess right at the outset that what I saw of the live coverage on tv last Friday of the Senate inquiry into illegal jueteng operations in the country lasted no more than thirty minutes.

But what I saw was enough to make me want to puke. I was sickened to my gut by the way the supposedly honorable Senator Jamby Madrigal was questioning a "guest" of the Senate, a man named Mosqueda, who was said to be a retired regional police director in Luzon.

On the watershed issue

Blurb: 'Knowing Eddiegul to be a reasonable man, one feels no doubt that he will find his way through, for what is right, just and reasonable in correcting a flawed and over-extended coverage of the watershed area.'

It's gratifying to learn that the management board of the Central Cebu Protected Landscape (CCPL) indorsed Compostela's proposal to exclude the barrios of Cabadiangan, Cambayog, and Tamiao - a total of 300 hectares - from the flawed protected watersheds.

President Arroyo in Cebu

Blurb: 'The Cebuanos were almost of one mind in their support of GMA's candidacy.'

It was a good thing for President Arroyo to visit Cebu despite the swirling controversy in the capital city. Although she appeared calm and in control, she must have been feeling the pressure of it all. That was the reason perhaps why they sneaked a visit to this province, knowing for sure that the Cebuanos have a soft spot in their hearts for her.

EDITORIAL – A dangerous tilting of the balance

In the latest Social Weather Stations survey, over half or 57 percent of all Filipino families now consider themselves poor. Yet the statistics are not as frightening as their implications.
