CEBU, Philippines - The Russian government has donated a bust of one of its influential writers, Leo Tolstoy, to the Cebu provincial government as a “vow of friendship and partnership” between the Russians and Cebuanos.

The bust, sculpted by Russian artist Gregory Pototsky, is displayed at the Museo Sugbu.

“We are very grateful that the government of the province of Cebu, give care and attention to this monument. This monument is a symbol of partnership and friendship between the Russian people and the people of Cebu,” said Russian Ambassador Igor Khovaev.

Tolstoy, described as one of the greatest authors of all time, was best known for his two novels, War and Peace in the year 1865-1869 and Anna Karenina in 1875-1877.

War and Peace is his longest novel that trace the history of the invasion of French to the Russian country while Anna Karenina is considered as one of his finest literary achievements, which tackled political issues.

Tolstoy reportedly shared the same dedication to his faith like the Cebuanos.

“The spirit man gud of Tolstoy is same with the Cebuanos… gi-dedicate gyud nani G. Potosky to the people of Cebu,” said Museu Sugbo Currator Grace Paulino.

Tostoy’s affirmation of Jesus Christ’s teachings led him to write “Tolstoy’s Bible” in which he shared his belief of Jesus Christ.

The installation of the bust yesterday was attended by Khovaev, Governor Hilario Davide III, and Consul Armi Lopez, among others. (FREEMAN)
