The Vicariate of Western Cebu (Part 2)

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

Fr. Felipe Redondo reported in 1887 what was and what is the Diocese of Cebu. In this article we continue with the last vicariate of Cebu:

Bogo, it was erected as a parish on May 31, 1850 by Diocesan decree, under the patronage of St. Vincent Ferrer through Royal approval of November 29, 1848. Its mother parish was Bantayan.

San Remegio, it was erected as a parish by Diocesan decree on March 23, 1864, based on the Royal approval of October 4, 1864, it is under the patronage of San Juan Nepomuceno, its mother parish was Bogo.

Daan-Bantayan, it was erected as a parish under the patronage of Santa Rosa de Santa Maria, by Diocesan decree of August 10, 1858, through Superior approval of April 25, 1855, its mother parish was Bantayan. The visitas (small chapel) of Daan Bantayan were Campalo, Calapi, Bagay, Tapilon and Paypay. Interestingly the report of Fr. Redondo mentions that Medellin is an annex of Daan Bantayan. This was how it was reported:

"The town of Medellin, its capital being situated in what used to be a visita known as Buenavista, in the western coast, three hours away. The latter has the visitas of Cauit in the same coast one hour away; Tindog and Baterca in the eastern coast with a church each, in fair state of repair. -Daan Bantayan is situated on the shore in the western coast north of the island of Cebu; it is 5 leagues away from San Remegio, 6 leagues away from Bogo; to the west is the island of Bantayan, with Santa Fe some four hours away and Bantayan six hours by sea."

Bantayan, was founded by the Definitorio (Chapter of Definitors) of the Augustinian Order on June 11, 1580, and turned over to the clergy during the time of His Excellency, Bishop Agusto. It is under the patronage of the Apostle St. Peter.

Santa Fe, was erected as a parish by Diocesan decree of April 7, 1881 through Superior approval of March 29, of the same year. It is under the patronage of Sweetest Name of Jesus. Its mother parish was Bantayan. Its old barrios are Obob and Ocoy.

Tuburan, it was erected as parish by Diocesan decree on February 13, 1857 through Superior approval of July 26, 1854. It is under the patronage of St. Anthony de Padua. It used to be a visita of Jinulauan. (To be continued)
