Christmas symbols

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago-Visaya - The Freeman

Regardless of socio-economic status, Christmas, though it is a borrowed celebration for Filipinos, is celebrated with so much zeal, verve, and, even to some extent, opulence.

Christmas has many symbols that when we see them we right away associate them with the season. These symbols could have a higher meaning that impacts the way we think and behave. Beyond their physical symbolisms we look for the spiritual meaning.

The lantern, for instance, which takes on many forms and sizes that some use intricate materials so different from what I have seen in my younger years, so simple that it was made of bamboo sticks, Japanese paper, and voila, our windows came alive! Now, with elaborate decorations and various bright colors, in big establishments and homes, we find lanterns adorned with sophisticated lights.

It may take various meanings but the star on the Christmas tree refers to the star of Bethlehem which guided the three kings to the baby Jesus. Melchor, Balthazar, and Gaspar brought gifts of gold, incense, and myrrh to the newborn. A star is also the heavenly sign of prophecy fulfilled long ago, the shining hope of humanity.

Not only during birthdays but also on Christmas, a dominant color is red, symbolizing the Savior's sacrifice for all, represents His blood when he died on the cross.

Christmas trees also come in various heights, from the smallest that is placed on the side table or altar to the ones in receiving areas and lobbies of the hotels. Brightly colored series illuminate with varying light movements.

Though giving of gifts is present in other occasions, it is during Christmas that all of us have generally practiced. Such practice is inspired by the wise men who brought their gifts to honor the birth of Jesus. God also gives us the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit to follow his direction; wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge, piety, fortitude, and fear of the Lord.

And who could forget the belen that also comes in various sizes and degrees of elegance? There is one that is placed at the side table or one that is the centerpiece or at the very entrance of the house.

Truly these are symbols that provide inimitable jubilation to the season. And yet these are physical symbolisms to the very reason of the season. The spirit behind such celebration is what we are always reminded of every year. And for some it may not be necessary for as long as there is a gathering of friends and family members, the tables are filled with food, but beyond all these is what we need to find because it is always the missing piece of the entire puzzle. And oftentimes it is the last to find.

The very symbol of Christmas is Jesus Christ himself. He takes the symbolism of peace, forgiveness and love. No amount of Christmas tree, color, gift-giving, parol or belen can take the place of the one who has sacrificed His life to save the entire humankind.
