Using technology in society

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

Recently, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña announced that there will be a revamp in the system of deployment in the service vehicles of the city. Instead of manually assigning a vehicle to a specific department or a specific employee, they are looking into using the system like that of Transport Network Vehicle Services where employees will just book a vehicle for their official use. This lessens drivers doing nothing while waiting for their passengers and also minimizes the possible abuse of power in using the vehicle for personal reasons. The app itself records the whereabouts of the vehicle, the time it was used, and the duration of the whole trip. The mayor says it is transparent and clean.

There is still much to do with the proposed technology but it could be a first in the country. There has been a problem across the nation on accountability. Those in power use what is not theirs for their own advantage. They think it is doable but if we base it on the rules of government officials, it is a definite no-no. I guess that's how it works too for other corporate offices.

I think it is a shame how we look to technology to correct the errors of humans. It could have been easy to be honest and to give the feedback but somehow others find it hard. Where is the Filipino value of being honest? Somewhere along the line we lost this trait when white lies became a norm in society.

Today we shun away from taxis which are known to be deceitful when it comes to fare. We like how TNVS systems work because they allow us to give the exact fare. There is no need for a "pakyaw" system which is illegal and a waste of money. Taxi drivers have earned a reputation for being rude and unpleasant to their prospective customers. Not to mention they also do not maintain their units that well. If not all of them, then most of them.

The point is, technology should never dictate how we should act or live if only we had our ethics and values on hand. Somehow it got lost along the way but we can always redeem it back. If we are determined to be in a government or in a society where being true to one's self and the oath made when taking office becomes top priority then I guess we can always make this place a better one.

I wish we can all reflect on our work ethics whether or not we are in government. We need workers who are not only loyal but trustworthy. My suggestion: build the values from the household.
