What about other sectors?

THAT DOES IT - Korina Sanchez - The Freeman

It is a good time to be a policeman. Aside from the all-out support from the highest official of the country, as well as the promise of being released from jail if they were simply doing their job, it seems that only police officers and soldiers are receiving increases in their wages. If the two houses of Congress sign the proposal, new police officers will receive almost double their current salary at the start of the new year. There are also other services covered by wage increases, such as the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Public Safety College, Philippine Coast Guard, and National Mapping and Resource Information Authority.

What about employees in the health sector? Why not raise their wages as well? What about the doctors and nurses working in government or local government hospitals? So many nurses prefer to leave the country because of the pitiful wages they receive here. There are many good nurses who can be of so much help to patients if they will just not leave. I can understand why they want to work abroad. In other countries, their wages are outstanding. After only two years of working abroad, they return home as millionaires. I do not underestimate the sacrifice and dedication of soldiers and policemen, especially our heroes who fought in Marawi. But there are other sectors in government, not just the police and military that President Duterte is obviously attending to.

Some are also asking where all the money will come from. According to the Department of Budget and Management, five trillion pesos will be required to implement the program for all wage adjustments of policemen and soldiers, as well as retirees. Five trillion. Some say that six or even nine trillion pesos will be needed. Are we that rich?

And according to PNP chief Gen. Dela Rosa, if he becomes president, he promised retired policemen that he will quadruple their benefits. I really don't know where he gets his ideas. Does he even think of the simple math of all this? Or does he know something about the country's treasury that we don't. Dela Rosa's intentions have also been made clear. He wants to become a politician. So that's why he acts the way he does. He is set to retire next year. Perhaps the notion of no longer being in the limelight is too much for him to bear.
