All in the right mind

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

Last Sunday's news of a man beheading his wife wasn't exactly very palatable for a weekend morning. The incident took place in Barangay Tayud in the town of Consolacion. The police recovered the two sharp objects used by the suspect who was killed by the authorities after he tried to escape them.

The family of the suspect said that he has been in and out of the psychiatric ward because of his mental state brought about by drugs. When he was discharged, they pleaded with the doctor to rehabilitate him because he might cause further damage, but the doctors refused and said that he was already okay. It turned out that the family was right, and a crime took place.

What is the state of mind of somebody who is under the influence of drugs? I cannot really answer it myself but all I know is you would lose your basic instinct and maybe your conscience. Had it been that the suspect went into rehabilitation, then I guess the incident would not have happened. He killed the mother of his children without even a hint of pity.

It is high time that we should be aware of how to take care of our mental health. This is something that shouldn't be a taboo in our society these days. When one is undergoing a mental disorder, he or she shouldn't be shunned. There should be a strong support system as with all other illnesses. Just because it involves the mind doesn't mean that the person is totally hopeless. After all, we believe in second chances.

I appreciate those manning telephone lines of the Department of Health that are available for those who are in need of somebody to talk to in case thoughts of suicide enter the mind. But suicidal tendency is only one of the many mental disorders in a person. There are a lot more, and we must act fast now.

Illegal drugs may be a reason for a distorted state of mind. Yet, before the person has taken illegal drugs, there must be a reason behind and that reason must be addressed. I don't believe illegal drugs is the primary problem in society, as it is only a secondary problem forced by a trigger that has yet to be discovered. Also, it varies from person to person.

We live in a time when technology is readily available and the family as a basic unit is slowly diminishing. It is time to reevaluate the role of the family and close friends in society. Sometimes, they could be the reason behind the many problems that we are facing. One thing is for sure, no person's head is worth removing.
