Culture of transformation

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago-Visaya - The Freeman

Every society aspires for change. And given this collective aspiration, a member of the society would also seek something new. But not all changes will be embraced with a high level of acceptance. Some changes could be met with disagreement.

Any decision or action by a member must conform to social conventions. For a member of a society, there is a need for communal affirmation. Take for instance in the case of beauty or beauty transformation which is highly influenced by the so-called dictates of the society. Society dictates certain conventions which change over time.

The revelation of the physical changes, through cosmetic surgery, and so from Marlou Arizala to Xander Ford, shows opposing views from those surprised by such transformation. And there are many underpinning lessons from it that boils down to how society regards it and its impact on today's young generation.

For one, poverty is a motivating factor to aspire for a shortcut to fame. It is not education or perseverance and patience that would drive one to look for instant celebrity status. In a world that is very much driven by social media, one could easily claim instant popularity from a wide array of attention-grabbers that would capture the virtual world.

We are created because each one of us has a unique purpose in life. One may be defying that purpose along the way to fulfill personal purpose but what I believe in is when such change is contrary to some essential goodness for humanity then it would be something else. If it is a change that creates goodness to others, change that would inspire others then it this kind of change that we are all made for.

It is not really one's physical appearance that people don't like in us. It is how we relate with them. Dislike of one's appearance is temporary and superficial but it is one's social skills and emotional attachment that sustain our relationship with others.

If we want to have a real change, it is the change that comes from the inside. This is the change that is lasting and memorable not only for oneself but for others as well.

Receiving both negative and positive comments from the netizens show that the society has not fully accepted such artificial physical transformation. And probably in an industry that puts premium on the physical look, it does not generally give a positive message to our young who instead put emphasis on building good inner qualities.

On the other hand it is also a celebration of strength, a triumph over a judgmental society by making a decision that would eventually change the way other people feel and regard.

This leaves us an important lesson to never judge one's ability by merely on the looks. A condemnatory society pushes one to fit in. And fitting in is not, after all, a matter of what others can see in you but rather what you can share and what they feel for you in return. Let's give one a chance to show what is between the ears -and so inside the heart.
