Senseless demise
At 29 years old, all dreams of a disc jockey, Marie Alexi "Maxi" Bolongaita, are shattered by a senseless killing. This is just one of the many horrible stories of young individuals whose aspiration to make big in the future has been hastily and tersely concluded by worthless killings in every so often callous circumstances.
The suspect of Maxi's killing has string of criminal records, been in and out of jail, but still continues to sow criminality scot-free as if nowhere in his heart the merit of remorse and of moving on. Is it the society and the circumstances that made him so? After all, a number of social scientists believe that man's behavior is a product of society.
A number of studies have shown a flagrant fact that the behavior of a human being is created by the environment.We respond based on the environment which gives us the kind of stimuli for us to react accordingly.As human beings, we are all highly susceptible to environmental triggers which can powerfully seed responses in us.
And from the words of the grieving father for the suspected killer:"He is an animal. Any normal person cannot do that. I want him to live, and suffer. I don't want him dead. I want him to live and feel the pain."Yes, it's the incomparable pain that the father would also want the killer to feel.
And although we value independence for our children especially when the right age and stability comes but for some parents it would be hard to think of their children who are all alone. They are far from the immediate reach and attention of their parents and loved ones. The distance does not totally give us the peace of mind especially knowing that criminality strikes anytime, anywhere.
The life of Maxi and others won't be back anymore but the killers are still in our midst as they keep on lurking the bright future of our young. Maxi is just one of the many young people who in their independence would confront the risk of working even in an irregular time schedule and are very much exposed to the dangers of the night or dawn. They are still willing to continue for the realization of their dreams.
For one whose death is so abrupt, without premonitions whatsoever is so hurting for the family and loved ones. What a helpless individual who singlehandedly defend herself which one could have been supported in times of struggle. The loved ones have to overcome with sorrow, guilt, relief, anger and ambivalence-feelings that would undergo so many complexities.
The senseless death has seemed only to put the decisive stamp upon the senselessness of life itself. This is not supposed to be the very concept of a world that puts the sanctity of human being.
Maxi's final walk to turn over the crown to the new Miss Press Freedom is her forewarning in her adieu to her broadcasting world. This also bids goodbye to the world that promises her youth of a promising future.
After all, such senseless death reminds us the basic lesson in life that death comes like a thief. And literally when the real thief comes, by all means and manner of resistance, he takes life so dreadfully.
