Masiao suertres and tigbakay

Fiesta tradition. The police in a southern municipality reportedly ban the conduct of "tigbakay" or small-scale cockfight in the sitios. They turned down barangay officials' request to hold tigbakay on occasion of barrio rejoicing during fiesta. "Karong tuiga mingaw kaayo among pista kay wa may tigbakay (This year, we will have a boring fiesta because tigbakay is not allowed)," a sitio leader told The Ear. The police have no respect on traditions, he quipped,

Basis of the suertres. But this sitio leader said the local police are selective in enforcing their anti-illegal gambling campaign. He told The Ear that the police turned a blind eye on illegal numbers game called "suertres" which are proliferating down to the household level. This sitio leader said STL (small-time lottery) stations are also everywhere in the town, but could not be touched because these are legal. But the results of STL game results have become the basis of "masiao suertres."
