VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

Last Thursday, employees of the Cebu City Hall were asked to vacate their offices for a few minutes after a text message was sent to various officials and staff regarding a certain bomb that was set to explode inside City Hall or within the buildings near it. It created a buzz as workers went out of the building puzzled at what could have been just a hoax –well it really was.

Yesterday, Councilor Dave Tumulak who is the chairman for Peace and Order announced that based from their investigation, the man behind the eerie text message is a terminated City Hall employee. They made those who received the message and their common friends as basis for figuring out who the suspect was. As of this writing, there is no disclosure yet from what department the ex-employee came from and why he was terminated. However, they are sure that his frustration because of his termination led him to such an act.

At the back of my mind, I can say that the person involved is going through a rough time being unable to process his emotions on his own. He wanted to cause panic among his former officemates who also loathe by now, as if there is no other office in the world. It is such a pity that these kinds of people who do not know how to manage their feelings still exist today. We could get mad at them but the best thing to do is to help them.

How hard is it to move on from a career you've built for almost all your life? Well, it could mean the world if you've invested all your time into it. But, really, there is more to life than wallowing in a failure that you may or may not have committed. One can always move on, look for another job and invest in another chapter of your life, or a new career.

His move in creating a bomb joke was not at all productive, it also caused panic to some who are nervous. On a brighter side, we saw how the disaster team of Cebu City responded to the incident. We also saw how quick the policemen were, as well as the bomb squad of the military. They immediately sent their personnel to assess the place and declared it safe. The operations of City Hall were not hampered at all.

At the end of the day, the answer to frustrations is not to concoct a scene via text messaging. Soon enough, the authorities will discover who the suspect is and he may even end up in jail. It is better to let pain go via an outlet and start anew again. We shouldn't let another bomb threat create panic among other residents of the city and to those who plan to visit our place. Authorities work hard for our peace; a single text message shouldn't ruin all of that.
