ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago-Visaya - The Freeman

"Medyo Maldito" and "Snake Princess" are names that the young generation could effortlessly relate with, at least with their gags, skits and hugot lines on social media. Their presence in the social media is just the right avenue for them to grab the popularity among our millennials. I was involved in a recently finished feature film produced by Heritage Productions of Ms. Sunshine and Charles Lim. So far, this is the third film that I have worked with for this local production outfit. And the first feature film where all casts and crew are all Cebuanos!

This is definitely making the Cebu film industry vibrant and what seems to be bringing back the golden years of this local industry. With much boldness, Ms. Lim has taken the risk to gamble in an industry that has been considered dormant for the past decades or so. We may call it renaissance of the Cebuano film industry but this is really what I am seeing for the past years where well-intentioned art patrons are cognizant of their contributions to the industry that has brought honor to our roots. And though we have produced Mat Ranillo Jr., Gloria Sevilla and Caridad Sanchez but the big question now is: Who have sustained their footsteps? And who else will? It takes a much-needed support from the private sector and individuals to complement the dismal support from the government.

The film has been shot in scenic places that we Cebuanos are proud of. This is something non-Cebuanos can look forward to as the initial plan is to have it shown not only in the Visayas but in Mindanao as well.

Written by Jude Gitamondoc and Therese Marie Villarante, directed by Reuben Joseph Aquino and co-directed by Janice Perez, this romantic comedy talks about relationships, love for family and aspirations. I played the mother of the main character, played by Rowell Ucat, and co-actor Rio Delizo as Mark. Rowell is paired with "Star Power" finalist and Cebuana singer Akiko Solon. It is such a great honor and privilege to be working with young actors whose dedication to this craft is something worth nurturing. Another source of inspiration is the presence of veteran television and radio newscaster and film actor Dante Luzon whose indefatigable support to local film industry is unparalleled.

Ms. Lim is planning to have the film released for public viewing next year as it would not compete with big productions, much especially with foreign films. With the main intention of making sure that Filipinos have really the opportunity to view such film that reflects our own story, our unique aspiration as a people and with all Cebuano cast who have committed themselves to support the rebirth and promotion of the Cebuano film industry. Expressing one's feelings or love, Cebuanos are known to show so uniquely-through music, and oftentimes in amusingly manner. Yes, in the film, this is something that we need to look forward to.
