Ordering security

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

With very short notice, the Director General of the Philippine National Police visited the headquarters of the police in Negros Oriental. He wasn't clad in his official uniform. In fact, he wore a casual shirt, short pants and comfy rubber shoes, looking like he was going out for a stroll. His big body build caught my attention, and he smirked then asked if we saw anything wrong with the highest official of the police wearing plain clothes. I responded saying that it was fine then he granted us an interview.

It was the first time for the policemen in Negros Oriental to have the PNP Chief visit their camp. Out of awe, they took out their phones to take pictures of the man. He talked to them about proper protocol most especially in ensuring their camp will not be overrun by armed terrorist groups. In jest, he asked the police to remove their caps with ease just so they could have a common ground. I have never seen the policemen in this area listen to intently to a man they said they idolize. They nodded every time his point made sense to them and laughed when their leader's humor demanded it. With every strong point the man gave, was a conviction in their faces to do their jobs beyond what is expected of them.

But more than the antics of this man was his strict order on security. As we speak, there might be several members of the Maute group who are looking into the possibility of crossing borders to different provinces. General Bato dela Rosa wants to fully track down the movement of suspicious groups and will procure floating assets that will watch over the coast of the provinces in the Negros Island and Central Visayas. All barangay officials are directed to also be on their toes and to report immediately to authorities whatever they may find unusual in their area. If there is no participation of the community, then their efforts might just go to waste.

The way he ordered security was not demanding as I imagined it would be. He just talked to us like we were old buddies but deep inside we knew that he meant every word he said. The public is now afraid because of an intelligence report circulating online that a simultaneous attack by the terror group will take place on a specific date. He said there is nothing to worry about, noting that his men are on top of everything.

While it is true that our security may be something we should fear for, trust is key in these times. Peace may have not been attained in some parts of the country but we can do our part by being vigilant and making sure that no untoward incident will happen. I thank the Director General for being so assuring, I place my hundred percent trust on his men that they can do their job well.
