Our police just can’t enforce the anti-noise law

SHOOTING STRAIGHT - Bobit S. Avila - The Freeman

Last June 12, for Independence Day, we had treated to two free movies at the Ayala Cinema 5. Both were documentaries by Spyron-AV Manila of World War II stories that few Filipinos have heard of; the exploits of valiant Filipino guerrillas who made the Japanese occupation of the Philippines very uncomfortable. The first one is “Unsurrendered 2: The Story of the Hunters ROTC Guerrillas” and the other documentary is entitled “Valor: The Legacy of Col. Emmanuel V. de Ocampo” produced by the Philippine Veterans Bank and Spyron-AV Manila.

After the showing of the two documentaries, I asked my good friend Lucky Guillermo guest on my talkshow Straight from the Sky. So tonight we have Lucky Guillermo, of Spyron-AV Manila; Dr. Ricardo Jose, historian; and Mr. Jose Custodio, AFP military researcher and custodian. This is the story of Reserved Officers Training Corps cadets who at the start of World War II were on their first and second year at the Philippine Military Academy and were considered too young to be included in the United States Armed Forces in the Far East and were sent back to their respective homes.

But Col. Emmanuel de Ocampo gathered his ROTC classmates around the Laguna area and created the Hunters ROTC that made havoc for the Japanese Imperial forces. They were the most active guerrilla force during those harsh times. Perhaps it is because the majority of the USAFEE forces hunkered down for the defense of Bataan and ended up surrendering to the Japanese and suffering in the Death March.

So watch this very interesting talk about the two documentaries on SkyCable’s channel 53 at 8 p.m. with replays on Wednesday and Saturday same time and channel. We also have replays on MyTV’s channel 30 at 9 p.m. Monday and at 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday.

I had lunch with Police Regional Office-7 Director Chief Superintendent Noli Taliño last week to tell him what I wrote in this corner last week about the violation of the anti-noise law with impunity. This is about the numerous discorals that disturb our sleep almost every night. For most of the week these discorals stop at midnight. But last Saturday evening, the discoral right beside our house in Sitio Quinto Limbo that celebrated the Feast of San Juan Bautista violated the anti-noise law, boom booming their sound boxes way past midnight.

My sister then called 166 and the person on the line was sympathetic to the discoral because he told my sister it only happens once a year. I wanted to find out who the fellow who answered the call was so I could ask him which part of the anti-noise law granted exemptions because it is the fiesta of the barangay or sitio.

One of the things that many people expected when Pres. Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte won the Presidency was he would enforce the law especially the anti-noise laws. Well, I suggested to my sister that it is high time to test our laws and file the necessary cases before the Office of the Ombudsman for the failure of public officers to enforce our laws so we can teach them a lesson that there are things that we cannot tolerate anymore! Barangay Captains, you are now on notice!

Over the weekend, the netizens, especially the Dutertards, were agog over the unexpected interview over the British Broadcasting Corp. where “Hard Talk” talkshow host Steve Sarkur had a one-on-one interview with Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV. This interview has gone viral around the internet and it also got me into watching this interview intently. Yes, I watched it twice for good measure and I hope you readers out there could watch it too.

One would expect that Sarkur would have accepted anything that Trillanes would give as his reply to his question. On the contrary, Sarkur made mincemeat out of Trillanes who sounded more like the original Trillanes we knew during the Oakwood mutiny, who then had no confidence in himself. It turned out that Sarkur came to the Philippines and interviewed a lot of people. Hence he ended up saying “Your comments are out of tune with the ordinary Filipinos!” Ouch!
