The Left is negotiating in bad faith

WHAT MATTERS MOST - Atty. Josephus B. Jimenez - The Freeman

The Philippine government panel did precisely what is right and called for when it cancelled the negotiations with the National Democratic Front. For how could any negotiating panel ever hope to talk about peace when the other side's leader gave an order to the New Peoples' Army to accelerate and augment guerilla attacks on government forces? The order was given by no less than Jose Maria Sison, the overall leader of both the NDF and the Communist Party of the Philippines, as their reaction to the declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao. The same Joma Sison sits in the NDF's panel of negotiators. How then can they negotiate in good faith when actions betray their true intentions?

I am now tempted to believe that the NDF/CPP/NPA do not really have any intent to settle issues with the government panel. They are just going through the process to buy time and gain concessions from the government. They are also there to gather information as an overt act of open espionage. By the glaring looks of it, it is becoming more and more evident that they do not have any genuine and honest objective to make the negotiations succeed. Thus, it can be said, not without substantial evidence, that these people are just posturing as a PR spin. They really want protracted warfare as the overarching policy of the Left against the government.

From the very beginning, I never deluded myself into imagining that the communists would abandon their armed struggle in favor of a parliamentary fight. These talks in Oslo, Norway, and the Netherlands, are only a charade. It makes both panels look good to the international community. But, on the other hand, if Joma Sison wants to continue the war, then he should join Secretary Jesus Dureza and Secretary Silvestre Bello III in cancelling the peace talks. Those talks could only highlight the Left's spin and projection that the NDF/CPP/NPA enjoys a belligerent status before the whole world. The government has everything to lose and nothing to gain. At the end of the day, it will still be war.

The Left is taking advantage of the government's attention being focused on the Maute Group's invasion and rebellion. Sensing that our armed forces are busy fighting against the rebels in Lanao, they have been instructed by Joma to attack, attack, and attack our outlying police stations, our too-trusting army, navy and air force. Thus, while sitting at the peace table, the Left are staging blitzkrieg ambushes and offensive tactics, which caused multiple deaths to our soldiers and police officers. Now, we know better. We should never be outsmarted and outmaneuvered by Joma and his men. Now that the peace talks are cancelled, let us shift our engagement in the battlefield. And let the bullets talk. These are not the kind of people who deserve the attention of the government.
