Sottos and Dutertes of Davao; migrants from Cebu

Vicente Duterte, son of Facundo Duterte and Zoila Gonzales of Danao, Cebu, was born on November 23, 1911. Vicente became a lawyer on February 27, 1940. He was appointed by President Sergio Osmeña Sr. on January 4, 1946 as Mayor of Danao, Cebu. Other appointees were Luis Almendras as vice mayor, and Narciso Lavador, Pelagio Fernandez, Jose Derecho, Anacleto Durano, Carlos Enriquez, and Constancio Batucan as acting councilors. Don Sergio was defeated in the first post-war presidential election by the Nacionalista break-away, the party later called as the Liberal Party headed by Manuel Roxas. The election was held on April 23, 1946. Roxas thereafter replaced the appointees of Osmeña. In Danao he made the following appointments: Pedro Sepulveda as mayor, Aniceto Gonzales as vice mayor, and Eugenio Olivar as councilor. Vicente then decided to migrate to Davao, as it was in 1916 when Antonio Minoza, Municipal President of Argao, Cebu, was appointed as Deputy Governor of the Department of Mindanao and Sulu. In 1917 the population of Argao which was 61,000 became 30,000. Vicente then became Governor of Davao succeeding Alejandro Almendras who ran for the Senate. Vicente Duterte served as Governor of Davao from 1959 to 1965. When Senate President Ferdinand Marcos became president, Vicente was appointed as Secretary of the General Services Offices until his death on February 21, 1968 (the office was abolished after his death). The son of Vicente by the name of Rodrigo Roa Duterte (the current president) became a lawyer on June 20, 1973. The elder brother of Vicente, Ramon, became a lawyer on December 31, 1925 and served Cebu City as mayor, as did his son by the name of Ronald (became a lawyer on March 2, 1956). The daughter of Rodrigo by the name of Sara (presently Davao City Mayor) also became a lawyer on May 12, 2006. Vicente Duterte's vice governor was Manuel Sotto (became a lawyer on March 8, 1957). Both were elected on November 1, 1959. Cesar Sotto was elected Board Member of Davao on December 14, 1937, his fellow board member was Ramon Kimpo and the governor was Pacifico Sobrecarey. Manuel Sotto was later elected Vice Mayor of Davao City on November 14, 1967, serving as vice mayor until 1971. Manuel "Noli" Sotto was the son of Cesar Sotto, the eldest child of Don Vicente Yap Sotto of Cebu. The mother of Cesar was Bernabela Manuel. Cesar served as congressman of the Lone Congressional District of Davao from 1938 to 1941. It was Congressman Cesar Sotto who converted Magugpo District into a Municipality now called Tagum. Incidentally, it was the nephew of Cesar by the name of Vicente Sotto III who became a senator who authored the law converting Tagum into a city on January 30, 1998. Don Vicente Sotto became a lawyer on March 27, 1917 while his elder brother Filemon (who also became congressman and senator) became a lawyer on October 30, 1905, a son of Vicente by the name of Tagakotta (son of his wife Maria Ojeda of Dumanjug, Cebu) became a lawyer on June 8, 1937.
