Who needs superstars?

PERSPECTIVE - Jerry Tundag - The Freeman

As if to rub in the lack of glitter brought on by the boycott of the inaugural balls for new US president Donald Trump by big names stars, somebody pooh-poohed online that the inaugural entertainment resembled the amateur show "America's Got Talent." And talent indeed it got. Without meaning to, the person who made the online comment underscored the unassailable fact that America is so full of talent it actually has no need for swell-headed superstars.

The skillful numbers provided by the super talented but non-marquee inaugural ball performers were so refreshing, awe-inspiring, diverse and clean that they proved to be a most welcome, if unintended, break from the usual filthy-looking, crotch-clutching, monotone-sounding superstars who have grown filthy rich sucking up America's slide to decadence.

The performances were so wide-ranging and American that one cannot help but wonder why the heck past inaugural balls had to put up with all the same-sounding, same-looking gigs coughed up spoiled so-called artists who lack the versatility of true artistry that they shine and fall on a single train of skill. Was it to merely accommodate the swell-heads to prop up their egos, or was it the other way around, to prop up inaugurals on the strength of glitter?

It did not come as a surprise, however, that many of the superstars would boycott the inaugurals. They, like many Americans, just did not get it. Trump did not foist himself on the American people. He is just the product of a process in which all Americans freely participated, a process they claim to believe in, otherwise they would not impose it on the rest of the people in this world.

The process is called free elections. It is part of a system called democracy. The inaugurals are a testament to the successful conduct of free elections. The peaceful turnover of power is the hallmark of a working democracy. Just because the superstars do not like Trump, they thought that by boycotting his inauguration they can show his contempt for him.

But their boycott is no skin off the back of Trump. He does not care about the superstars. Not only has he a clear mandate from the rest of the Americans, he now also leads a wonderful country that, as the inaugural balls would prove, is so full of other great talents he actually has no need for any superstar to clutter his stage.

More devastatingly for the uncomprehending superstars, their boycott never hurt Trump as their intended target, it actually assailed the system of which they belong and are a part of. It was the inaugural ball, the living proof of a working American system, that they succeeded in demeaning and defiling. They have assaulted a great and venerable institution.

Thanks to their childish tantrums, all patriotic Americans who love their country now know who the real enemies of America are from the inside, and it is they who gnaw at its internal wiring to make it short-circuit and implode. The least patriotic Americans can do is boycott these superstars in turn. They can shun the work that has made them so filthy rich and spoiled they think they can dictate the course an entire country takes.
