Habal-habals in Colon

THE EAR - The Freeman

Peak season. Most drivers share the common observation that passenger season normally peaks in December. Even passengers themselves have noticed nowadays that vacant taxis are becoming very rare. Public utility jeepneys, especially those travelling during the rush hours, are usually bursting at the seams with passengers. It is not a surprise habal-habals or motorcycles-for-hire, which remain illegal as of this writing, have started operating even in Colon, one of the most important traffic routes in Cebu City.

Passengers don't mind. And with commuters scrambling their way to look for public utility vehicles, some don't really mind riding these habal-habals, even if safety is at stake.  An EAR informer told The FREEMAN that he decided to ride a habal-habal because there were no taxis available and he was already late for a Christmas party. From Colon to a Japanese restaurant in Barangay Lahug, the informer paid the driver P100. At least, he said, he cut the trip by as much as 20 minutes.
