Worried when it pours

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago-Visaya - The Freeman

Just a few months ago, the religious groups asked the faithful to pray the Oratio Imperata for rain to come. And then rain came. But I'm worried when it's raining. Every time it rains and away from home, I would always think what would happen to a small portion in our kitchen's roofing as it drips, much more when rain pours so hard. This is one thing we overlooked as part of the preparation for rainy days as we could have it fixed by our carpenter neighbor. When the rain pours for an hour, it would definitely spill all over the area. But for us at home, this is just a lesser inconvenience.

Our own experience is nothing compared to the hassle that is bringing to those who are still in the temporary evacuation centers, those who are waiting for the time when they can go back home. They are our brothers and sisters who have been promised to go back to new abodes after just a few weeks.  But the waiting is not over. They still have to bear those interrupted nights of sleep every time the rain pours. This is a very much similar picture to those who are sleeping in the sidewalk. When it drizzles, they would start rushing to the corner just to be away from the reach of the rain. I can't imagine when it's really raining so hard, they have to wait for hours to finally take a rest.

While others at in their deep slumber, enjoying the coldness of the rain, at the comfort of their homes, others are seeking for a safer place. They are forced to face another day of toil, another day of struggle to keep them awake at work.

Too much rain leads to deluge. Those in the riverbanks are also threatened. They cannot sleep well as their lives are at risk every minute. They are on the lookout waiting for the water to rise. Children are not safe outside as there are reported cases of children being washed away by flood. Their houses made of light materials are very much vulnerable to be carried away when waters rush in.

Those in the mountain barangays are likewise vulnerable to landslide, especially those areas where mountains are denuded. Families are praying that they would not be part of the debris that would be washed away.

And for those going to their work, expect a great inconvenience as it would take time to reach to their destination. It becomes a normal sight to see workers queuing and waiting to have their rides. Waiting time doubles. Patience is tested.

And probably just like a father whose children have conflicting demands, God would be confused what we really want to have or happen. Yes in every request there would be a different effect or impact especially when one is of greater amount or value. It is a challenge to strike the balance when we want both so we benefit from the advantages. And through time we have learned and managed to understand and respond accordingly to the dynamics of our environment. It is in understanding the cycle of situations and events that are taking place in our midst. We may be quick or slow in our response but we have learned through time how to respond when we are confronted with certain phenomena.

We worry because there are uncertainties. We do not have the picture of the future. But through experience we see some possibilities. But possibilities are still uncertain. We oftentimes manage to respond based on our experiences but yet there is still room for ambiguity. Ad so we worry. If only we can see the entire future, we could have prevented hardships and challenges. Well, we just have to bear with the uncertainty as this brings lessons, thrill and excitement to life.
