Counting down

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

There's barely how many days left before the polls open for us to decide the fate of our country. That's barely how many days left until we decide who will sit in position and govern. The Monday that is to come will be a heated one as exchanges in views and opinions continue to blind the truth. If viewed from the outside, we can say that there are those who are informed and those who ride on the bandwagon. There are totally two different sets of people who both have a say as they cast their votes come May 9.

Of course it will be rocky, moreso bloody. I for one is already scared for my own life as radical supporters continue to bring down the credibility of our own names which we have worked hard for a couple of years. Just because of a sentence uttered and an advert aired. There is a deafening sound of an uproar by supporters who want to defend their own. The voiceless remain unscathed but their feelings are scarred, for life, I guess.

This is the era where information travels faster than its validation. Everywhere, everybody has a say and this is deemed correct. It is up to your conscience whether or not to accept the fact presented to you. It is a totally different mindset with roles played invertedly.

Despite the mix-up, the young ones still have a say in this elections. They are the ones who could speak in behalf of the people who will benefit for the next six years. The youth will determine what they want and where the direction of the country will go. Regardless of age and color, each of us has a say in this little archipelago.

So I urged each one, to make use of the declared holiday on Monday – no work, no classes. It wouldn't take too long to get up from bed, walk or take a short ride to the nearer polling center, line up, shade your ballot and feed it to the machine. Of course, you are given the choice to avail of the transparency feature of looking at the receipt of your ballot. We wouldn't deny those who will try to buy your vote, but your conscience will guide you. Just like what the Comelec-7 Director said, "Don't make your vote as a merchandise that is for sale." Truly, your dignity and persona will define the moment you decide whether to act on or not when the money is in front of you.

Don't just vote, too. Vote wisely. As in, be wise enough to know who deserves the seat. A wise mind is what we need amidst all the controversy and hatred around us. Votes like these will pave the way for a better Philippines, or so I hope.

On Monday, I will be on the sidelines, shielding myself for what could be the worse. My refuge will be the security of the agencies that vowed for a clean and honest election. My only wish is that once that ballot is casted, there is an intention to change what this country was and will be.
