Give love

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

Apart from Chinese New Year, another one of which we celebrate on February is Valentine's day. This day is a tribute to Saint Valentine of Rome, or so the history books say. He was a martyr because of his faith. In some countries and Anglican communities, his feast day is a legal holiday. The same traditions also are practiced: giving flowers, chocolates, cards, and other gestures of love toward their special someone.

As for me, I consider it a happy day despite how impossible it would be to get a table in every restaurant in the metropolitan. Add to gruesome situation, the bumper to bumper traffic jam since everybody just wanted to go out on that day. Hearts, flowers, and chocolates just make me so happy, just like every female. Well, that's what I thought.

Recently, a trend among youngsters on being bitter towards love has come across social media. Otherwise dubbed as "hugot," it could spell a sense of being unbecoming whenever discussion of a life partner is brought up. They say it is stemmed from being brokenhearted, and the desire to keep the status quo that way. The tag #walangforever gave singles a personality of empowerment defying that could have been normal.

What makes it more interesting, is the fact that young girls in the preteens are also getting in the hype of "hugot." Those who are about aged 10-14 feel that their crushes have let them down and that there could be no more happy ending for them. It could be a good thing, in one sense, knowing that they would not be open to go into another relationship. Yet, the downside is, they have been oriented at the dynamics of an opposite sex relationship at such an early age. At this time, their energy could be poured in those that could build a good foundation for their future.

Yet Valentines is not just about those who have a partner in life, or the broken-hearted. Love, in a nutshell, could apply to other forms. I, for one, know a lot of people whose love is centered towards forwarding the nation. One, a tour guide, gave up her job as an engineer in a multi-million company so she could show foreigners the beauty of our country. She patiently studied the beauty of every corner of the Philippines with the burden of showcasing the world what we have and could offer. Another, a banker whose job gave her stability to her children, but stopped doing work to go on a roller coaster ride for her love of creating memories and events for people.

This month is not about "hugot" and all the negative energy that comes with it. Although there is a hint of reality in every pick-up line, there is more to life that the bitterness that could be radiated. Give love, instead. Reach out your hand, show that smile, and believe in the promise that your passion will take you places. I, too, hoped in my passion which led me to love my job all the more. If we could have vibes like these everyday, there's not a reason in this world to be bitter.

There's less than a week to prepare for Valentine's, less than a week to make that table reservation, order those flowers and make a memorable night. As for me, I would spend my happy day like an everyday paying tribute to who I love and what I love.
