Celebrating senior

READER’S VIEWS - Henry L. Yu, M.D. - The Freeman

For those born in 1955, this year marks a milestone, a significant transition in their lives, as they are starting life as senior citizens. They who were yesterday's golden people (the fifty-agers) and today's diamond stars (the sixty-agers).

How does it feel to be 60? What's the beauty of being one? Those born in 1935 (who are now 80) and 1945 (who are now 70) would surely know as they've been there once upon a time not too long ago.

What are the good things of being a senior citizen? For one, younger people would give them the importance and respect. Also, they (the younger ones) would courteously give up a seat for them in the mall or in a restaurant. They would open the doors for them and would let them go in first.  People help them carry things, extending a helping hand when they ride a PUJ or go up or down the stairs.

The general population doesn't mind so much if they make a mess in a crowd by proclaiming that they're just acting their age. All these and more, and the privilege of not having to follow a long queue of people in transacting business in the bank or voting center or anywhere else - the so-called express lane. And, yes, to have the Senior Citizen ID card and the benefits and privileges of having acquired one, and more.

At 60, most of their basic needs shall have been fulfilled, like the need to be loved, to be needed, to be acknowledged, to be given importance, etc. There are a lot more privileges that are afforded to the senior citizens, things that they didn't get to experience years before as they were the ones doing special favors then to those older than them. Oh well, life is a cycle.

Rejoice and be glad that we are seniors because not everybody is given the chance to reach this age. Let us celebrate the Senior Citizens Month. Smile. Be happy. But most of all, let us thank God for the gift of life, for His unconditional love, His mercy and compassion. Just by being able to wake up each morning is already a blessing beyond compare, a miracle. The rests are just bonuses.

Thank you, Lord.
