"Capture"

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

I've had my phone for nearly ten months now. As the Korean company launched the model, I was eager to get a hold of it. So I did. Little did I know of the small features that amazed me so like saying the word, "capture" as in capturing moments with the camera phone. It is automated to go by voice command as long as you utter the words in a perfect English accent. Luckily for me, it was easy breezy. Thanks to an English speaking childhood.

Taking photos is a form of expression, a mode of art for those who are into detail. A snap could mean a thousand gestures, meanings that are beyond the photographers comprehension. When seen after time, it brings back memories and flashbacks that could reunite a generation together. Like the old song goes, "a picture paints a thousand words." Indeed, it does.

About three days ago, social media was in a total whirl trying to decipher the color of a dress. Was it black and blue, or white and gold? This brought about a great big deal to the public as people were having different views on the photo. In an odd manner, they were stressing over it arguing on what color it really was. According to some articles which reacted to the color faze, the difference in view is in relation to sensitivity to light of one's eyes. It only shows that people see things differently in a slightly odd manner. This is perspective.

Perspective is relative. Therefore it is not in conjunction with the norm. In the old days it seemed to make any sense. But now that we live in a post-modern world, the principle of having different perspectives is quite evident. What may be right for me may not be for the others. But there is no forcing of either to follow one or the other. Although it could bring about confusion (case in point: the color mystery of the dress), the post-modern era brings us to a level of embracing diversity in culture and sexual preference.

Letting go of the stereotypes is what this means about. This is the era where we let people be themselves and who they ought to be without anyone pushing them to be somebody else. This is a free country in a free world. Everybody has the right to express over clothes, preferences and manners that they choose to project. Just because somebody is gay does not mean that the person is weak, or just because somebody has tattoos does not mean that the person is an ex-convict. Go figure!

As the month of March unfolds, we also celebrate women's month. Women are also those who are victims of discrimination and bullying. With this celebration we realize that there is equality in both sexes because all are created as human beings. Man and woman alike may have biological differences but when they let out on their own, both can do what the norm defies. We eliminate the discriminating factor of a woman's limitation when in fact, a woman could work on tasks of men, could think like men do, sometimes even better. No offense, boys.

The society today does not still accept what a woman is capable of. Other companies still hire women for low-paying jobs while the executive boards are governed by men. But slowly we will be getting there. Accepting one for who they are takes time but I could only wish that it would be any sooner.

When we say "capture" and a photo comes to hand, keep in mind that not all things beautiful for you is the same for the others. The proper response would be to respect, keep things to yourself and accept people for who they are. Do not insist on your beliefs, or you will be sorry.
