Widows & widowers

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Freeman

"US won't waive custody of accused murderer Marine Corporal Pemberton," says the banner headline of the PhilStar. Noy Temiong to the militant activists: "May reklamo?"

It takes two to tango? On Pope Francis' 78th birthday, it took 7,000 dancers to tango (PhilStar, Dec. 18/14). It says here that when he was still Cardinal Bergoglio, "the Pope liked tango." That's different from saying, "the Pope liked to tango." Yes?

This is not to dispute the wishes of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, but I think he should protect himself from the evils of society by riding in a Popes mobile provided with safety nets, so to speak.

I remember one US President (forgot his name) who once said: "I value my life, God gave this life to me. To protect this life is the least I can do to show my God my appreciation of His gift to me."

There is at present a controversy over widows and widowers. There is a proposed law stipulating the period when a widow should remarry. The women are shaking their heads. Unfair, they say. Why put a date on when the widows can remarry? Even as the widowers are free to remarry anytime they want?

Some key Philippine government officials were asked what they had to say about the latest development in the Pemberton-Laude issue. All said "No comment." others said nothing. They just stood up and walked away. It was only former President Fidel Ramos who had the balls, er, guts to air his views, although it was a statement that was harmless to the US-Phl friendship. Well, at least he spoke.

Mindanao was first called "Land of Promise" by President Manuel L. Quezon or during Quezon's admin. That was over 50 years ago. It is still a Land of Promise. A young college student from Davao said to me: "Sagdi ra nang wa ma-fulfilled. Nindot man pamation. Ug mihatag kana og incentive sa atong mga apo to achieve what their lolos failed to achieve." The fulfillment of the promise, he said.

OVERHEARD. A jeepney driver from Labangon said a government doctor told him his two children were malnourished. Said the doctor: "Pakan-a sila kanunay og prutas." The driver told a fellow PUJ driver: "Nagpataka ra nag yawit doktora. Wa tingali masayod presyo sa prutas." Said his fellow driver: "Mansanitas ra tingaling prutas nailhan niya."
