Just for pun

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Freeman

I have been a collector of news headlines in Tagalog with amusing meanings in Cebuano. Some examples I have already written here. Like: "Totoy napiit sa pinto" and "Libangan sa resto." The other day someone added another interesting newshead: "Lagay ng obispo Ok na."

Sharing this with you "with malice towards none and charity for all." In other words, just for the pun of it.

Idiomatic expressions and figures of speech can sometimes lead to misunderstanding. Like when a society matron said to a fellow matron during an argument: "Nyora, I was not born yesterday." The other matron said: "Sure, I know. It shows on your face."

***

When a barangay official was told not to take his constituents for a ride, he was heard to have said: "Ah, dili oy. Wa man gani to bisan multicab."

Some years ago, I complained about the big potholes on the roads in Punta Princesa. "They're as big as Volkswagen cars," I said using hyperbole. A city engineering official (at that time) said: "Pataka ra ni si Jabat. Wa tingali kakita'g Volkswagen car."

Seriously speaking now, the Loon (Bohol) church constructed from 1814 to 1853 was demolished in only 33 seconds by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that rocked Bohol on Oct. 15, 2013.

That's how fast nature can destroy us if we don't give her due respect and care. That's why Francis Bacon said: "Nature, to be commended, must be obeyed."

I got this e-mail from Norberto Locsin a Manilan working as engineer in Cebu: Dear sir Jabat. I'm addressing this letter to you believing you'd be interested. I am an alumnus of UST-Manila. During the years I was studying there the university cage team was known as Glowing Goldies. It was the strongest collegiate team then and with the most number of fans. After its name was changed to Roaring Tigers, the team's strength and fame slowed down.

***

"I have talked with other UST alumni and we all agreed to suggest to the UST authorities to rename our team Glowing Goldies again. I am writing a similar letter to other newspapers in Manila. Thank you, Sir." Thank you too, Mr. Locsin.
