Family matters

"Edu and Luis Manzano represent what Shakey's is all about: fun, family and pizza," enthused Vic Gregorio,  president and CEO, Shakey's. "Both are fun to be with, they value family, among others, and they're pizza munchers."

During the launch, guests got to know the father-and-son tandem even better.

Contrary to public knowledge, funny men Edu and Luis are both loners.

"While we enjoy the company of our family, friends, and peers, we're also just as happy by our lonesome. We're okay just sitting down and observing the people around us," shared Luis.

Cell phones are off-limits during family vacations and dinners.

"Before, friendships and family were built fact to face, now relationships are built via texting, Skype and emails," Edu lamented. "So I made it a point that during our family vacays, cellphones are off-limits, no Wi-Fi, no computer games. Ang ganda because we got to spend quality time together," gushed Edu.

"Actually, the reason for that is because roaming is very expensive in Europe," Luis added with a hearty laugh.

According to Luis, Edu is such a disciplinarian.

"He's cool, but you have to follow his rules," said Luis. "I kept getting movie offers when I was still young, but my dad turned them all down... not until I finished college."

"People often ask me why Luis is so good in everything that he does. My reply? Because he went to school. A good education and a loving and supportive family are what kids need to succeed in life — not the latest gadgets," Edu added.

When asked what's his ideal family dinner, Luis hastily replied: "Something very casual. A simple meal with my dad and siblings — at Shakey's — are three full hours of non-stop kwento and tawanan."
