Plato Wraps unwraps its new look??

OOH LA LAI - Lai S. Reyes - The Philippine Star

A logo is to a business as your face is to you. It’s how you are recognized. It reflects your personality or, in the case of your business, your vision and principles.??

For 15 years, Plato Wraps has managed to survive without one. This food-cart business, which serves hot, fresh, filling grilled sandwiches on the go, made do with its fiery red and yellow signage and the tagline, “Great Meals in Small Packages.”??You’ve probably seen it — in the mall, in your school, in a cafeteria. It’s that plate-shaped (hence the name Plato) flat bread with delicious fillings — Chunky Chicken,  Ham and Cheese, Yummy Tuna, Beef Gyro, Very Veggies and more — you can count on for delicious comfort — every single time.??

I’ve always loved Plato Wraps. My personal favorite is the Chunky Chicken wrap, which is filled with premium chicken-breast chunks in a special dressing and thin cucumber slices. It’s the same wrap owner Karmela Seen made for me when I interviewed her at Plato Wraps’ first branch at SM Megamall 15 years ago. She told me the filling reminded her of her mom’s chicken sandwich, which was her favorite merienda when she was younger. Well, nothing much has changed. The brand still delivers on its promise — “great meals in small packages” — to this day.

“I knew nothing about design back then,” Karmela admits. “I thought that as long as I offered fresh, delicious and filling wraps, people would take notice. And they did!”??

But times have changed. With the advent of social media, our “iPhone eats first.” Everything has to be Instagrammable to keep up with competition and be able to attract a wider market, specially the millennials.??“I just realized the importance of the logo and branding when I asked my 26-year-old daughter Kreme to help me run the business,” relates Karmela.??

When Kreme took over, the first order of business was to revamp Plato Wraps’ look. “It’s more of aligning the look to the brand. Plato Wraps is all about freshness, fast, on-the-go. So when you look at our old tarp, it didn’t communicate to people what Plato Wraps really is,” explains Kreme,?so she tapped professional graphic artists and designers to help her execute the new look she wanted for Plato Wraps.??

“When she told me about her plan, I didn’t ask too many questions,” shares Karmela with an impish grin. “I just gave her my full trust. I was just surprised when she handed me the costing. Mahal pala to hire the services of professionals. But everything was worth it. I’m just so proud and happy of what my brainchild, Plato Wraps, has become. There’s no way we could survive for 15 years without our business partners’ and customers’ support.”

The Grand Reveal?

To celebrate the milestone, Plato Wraps unveiled its new look — replete with a new logo and cart design — recently at Pineapple Lab in Makati.??The round, striped logo is inspired by Plato Wraps’ signature ridged flatbread, making their brand much more identifiable.??

“From red and yellow, we changed the colors to white and green, which symbolize cleanliness and the freshness of our products,” Kreme says. “The ingredients are lined up in clear containers so customers will recognize right away the fillings we offer.”

At the launch, Kreme and Karmela showcased Plato Wraps’ signature ridged bread and the delicious fillings buffet-style to give guests the freedom to make their own wraps. The amiable staff was on hand to grill the flatbread for them.??Guests were also encouraged to take photos of their wraps, and post them on their IG and Facebook accounts with the hashtags #platowraps@15 and #platowraps. The two photos with the most number of likes won Plato Wraps gift certificates.??

Aside from the its new look, Plato Wraps also launched seasonal fillings such as Adoboritto, Cheese Pimiento and Platopizza.??“Customers are now more health-conscious,” adds Kreme. “They prefer products that are made with zero or less preservatives and additives. They want food that is prepared fast without sacrificing the quality and taste. Soon, we’ll be offering a healthier line of flatbread with calorie count to guide our health-conscious customers.”

Karmela, on the other hand, has been developing a chia wrap, as well as experimenting with fillings like beans sprouts and gourmet tuyo. The most exciting part? Plato Wraps will also come out with packaged fillings and flatbreads that customers can take home and enjoy at their leisure.??So watch out for more filling, exciting and delightful wraps from Karmela, the “Queen of Wrap.”?
