Ways to drink responsibly

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - “Drink responsibly” has always been the mantra of the country’s top beer manufacturer San Miguel Brewery Inc. But how does one actually practice it? Here are some tips on how you can be a responsible drinker and still make the best of happy hours.

Eat while you drink. There is a reason why peanuts are often served as pulutan alongside your favorite beer. Peanuts are high in protein, which helps slow the absorption of alcohol into the circulatory system. Another beermatch is anything with cheese. Different drinkers have different pulutan preferences but the point is, it’s not a good idea to drink when you haven’t eaten anything for long hours. Plus, drinking on an empty stomach on a hot day might produce hypoglycemia, which can cause dizziness, weakness, and mood change.

Drink water. It will keep you hydrated. Make sure you leave enough time between bottles to feel the effects of the first one before drinking the next one.

Pace the drinks. If you’re the party host, serve drinks at regular, reasonable intervals. This can avoid intoxication and can make the gathering focus more on building social relationships.

Don’t mix drugs and alcohol. If you’re on medication, check the information in the box to see what it says about drinking alcohol. Do not take anything if you have no idea what it will do to your body when combined with beer.

Appoint a designated driver. Have someone available who will not be drinking and will drive all drinkers home. This is critical, especially now that the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act is being implemented and which penalizes traffic offenders who fail the sobriety test and breathalyzer test. The old adage is true, don’t drink and drive. If no one in your barkada wants to have a sober night, bring enough money for a taxi.
