Healthy Options steps up ‘Love Food Don’t Waste’ campaign

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Do you have a positive attitude about food consumption? Throwing away food that is still fit for consumption can cause other problems. Apart from thinking about the starving people all over the world, consider the economic and environmental repercussions. Mother Earth suffers as all the surplus food ends up in a landfill, producing greenhouse gas emissions.

Throwing away food can lead to a major squandering of resources, including energy, land, water, labor and capital. Many individuals end up wasting food when they buy more than what is necessary, or cook more than what they can actually consume, leading to throwing of food in the trash bin. Inappropriate storage of food likewise leads to wastage.

Healthy Options, the Philippines’ all-natural products store, suggests simple ways to reduce food waste, as part of its “Love Food, Don’t Waste” campaign:

1. Think before you shop. Buy only what you need; it can lead to cost savings. Preparing a list of things you need to buy can come in handy when you are at the supermarket and in the process prevent wastage.

2. Love your leftovers. Many households throw away food. Learn how to use your food scraps. All it takes is a bit of creativity and resourcefulness to transform leftover bits of chicken, fish, chicken, fruits and veggies into appetizing new meals.

3. Practice the first-in-first-out principle. When unpacking your groceries, remember to put older products in front of the pantry/refrigerator and put new ones at the back. That way you end up using the older food items/ingredients first before they expire.
