How to achieve thicker, TVC-worthy hair

STYLE S.O.S. - The Philippine Star

Dear Rissa,

My hair seems to grow so slow. It also doesn’t look as healthy as it used to. We can get facials to rejuvenate the skin on the face, but what about the hair? What can I do to revive it and make it healthier and thicker?

I’m a firm believer that what you see on the outside reflects what‘s on the inside. Everything starts from what’s beneath: flawless makeup starts with good skin, beautiful hair starts with a healthy scalp. I was in a similar dilemma as you — my hair had been feeling limp and it didn’t help that I had very fine hair. I recently came across the most intriguing kind of shampoo while I was at Studio Fix by Alex Carbonell at Shangri-La at The Fort — an exfoliating shampoo! I couldn’t understand why and how shampoo can exfoliate. It’s the first time I heard of such a thing and I asked celebrity hairstylist and hair expert Alex about it.

Apparently, even the scalp needs exfoliating. The Aveda Invati Exfoliating Shampoo removes the buildup of sebum and product residue that can clog pores in the scalp and affect healthy hair, thanks to wintergreen-derived salicylic acid. Just like how exfoliating the skin of the face allows younger skin cells to surface, exfoliating the scalp with the right shampoo allows the scalp to be cleansed and renewed, allowing healthy new hair to grow. It made so much sense. No wonder Aveda’s Invati line is a solution for thinning hair meant to reduce hair loss so you keep the hair you have longer.

I bought my own bottle since I got so curious. I paired it with the Aveda Invati Thickening Conditioner. It doesn’t feel as bubbly as the typical shampoo, but it did make my scalp feel the cleanest it’s ever been! Even the conditioner did not feel heavy or weighed my hair down — it made my hair super smooth and bouncier, too. I’m officially hooked and I love how healthy my hair looks and feels. We take it for granted, but a clean scalp really does wonders.
