MANILA, Philippines — “I love cheese!” Heart Evangelista recently exclaimed during the launch of her “HeArt & Style by Love Marie” exhibition in SM Megamall.

The actress loves cheese so much so that she did not only marry Sen. Chiz Escudero, but also stained a “super expensive” luxury bag with it.

“I was using a super expensive bag and eating French fries when the cheese fell on the bag’s bottom. There was a big oil map on the leather. It cannot be removed by any store, so the only thing left to do is to paint on it,” she recalled on how she began to paint on bags.

Little did she know that such an accident would turn into a career in painting on luxury handbags. Some were apprehensive of her painting on bags as it allegedly destroys the original design, while others appreciate it and even asked for their bags to be painted on. Nowadays, Heart receives hand-painted bag orders from as far as Hong Kong and Dubai.

Four or five years ago, the actress was going through an emotional rollercoaster brought about by crises in her family and love life when she discovered another light at the end of the tunnel.

“I’ve been painting on my house’s walls when I was young. I also scribbled on magazines. But I only got serious about painting four or five years ago. There was so much going on my life, and painting was therapeutic for me,” she shared.

“Being an artista, you have to please everyone. Kailangan magustuhan nila. Kailangan lagi kang maganda. Hindi ka pwede magkamali. But with painting, I felt that I just pleasing myself. It was just a release for me. I’m happy na na-aappreciate din s’ya ng iba.”

Since becoming an artist using her real name, Love Marie, Heart has co-designed a collection with fashion designer Mark Bumgarner and personalized a chair for Philux.

How different is painting on furniture versus painting on clothes? “It was very hard…because like gowns, they’re already finished. It’s not like tela lang na you can put on the floor and paint on it. It was finished, it was ready when you paint on it, so I really could not make a mistake. I had to stitch and glue flowers on my own because other people might not get the design I want.”

Likewise, Heart had a makeup collaboration with Happy Skin. “Before we can look like this, we have a makeup artist, we have a hairstylist, you need a stylist because you need nice clothes. At the end of the day, kapag nakatulong ka, nakapagpasaya ka ng tao, you’ll shine. You’ll really have a different kind of aura,” she described what she thinks makes a person beautiful.

“Maraming magaganda d’yan pero hindi sila masaya kaya they don’t really shine as those who are not perfectly beautiful but happy. So for me, that someone who’s really beautiful is a happy person.”

She, however, admitted that she does not always feel beautiful all the time.

“As an artista, I’m not always beautiful. I’m this chinita girl…I’m only five-two,” she said of her insecurities.

According to her, “Sometimes, you have to do something to lift yourself up.”

What she does to change her mood besides painting is to play around with her fashion choices.

“Sometimes, you want to play with wild, different colors but most of the time, I like it very basic,” she enthused.

“For me, it doesn’t really matter what brand. Nasa pagdadala lang ‘yan. I love white, I love black. For me, sometimes, it’s nice to play with colors, but when you’re too busy to think and you’ve got so much in your mind, sometimes all you need is a bare uniform. I love wearing white. It always looks cool and it’s practical, actually, because nobody knows na inuulit-ulit mo lang. ‘Di naman nila alam na ‘yun din ‘yung blazer na sinuot mo last week. So, basic – white, blacks, gray, okay na sa’kin ‘yun.”

One of her most memorable outfits include an Hermes scarf.

During the exhibition, Heart gave the public not only a peek into her personal collection of painted gowns, bags, and furniture, but also her arsenal of scarves.

In the following videos, she demonstrates three ways on how scarves can transform your look.

“It does not have to be an Hermes scarf. It could be any scarf!” she beamed.
