Have you ever seen a lipstick color on your friend that you found absolutely beautiful but when you tried it on yourself it didn’t look right? If so, don’t fret; it’s something we can all relate to.

As much as lipsticks are fun to play around with, with so many colors, textures, and ingredients to choose from, it becomes hard to find the perfect shade, especially when finding a natural lipstick you just want to swipe on for going to the grocery or picking up your kids. Here are some tips on how to find the perfect lipstick for you.

Complexion – Complexion does not only determine your foundation shade, but also plays a vital role in helping you pick out your lipstick. If you have fair skin, going for nude, pink, and light colors would look the most natural. If you are more tan, colors like rose, mauve, and berry would look best because they are a bit darker. If your skin tone is a shade darker, you would look amazing in caramels, browns and plums. Don’t be afraid to still rock light colors, though!

If ever you find yourself confused, a great tip to choosing the most natural lip color is to pull your bottom lip down and look at the color inside your lips. Try to match the color of your lipstick to that, you will find it looking very natural!

Texture – Another important thing to remember is that, depending on the texture of your lipstick, the way it can appear completely changes! The categories of texture are sheer, matte, creamy, glossy, shimmery, and sparkly. It can affect everything from the coverage to the finish of the lipstick. For example, I love how I look with creamy pink lipstick, but when I use sheer red lipstick, my lips look horrible, so don’t be afraid to experiment as much as you need to find your favorite texture.

Usually, when you have very minimal makeup, using sheer lipstick or even just gloss keeps the look very natural. When you have medium- to heavy-coverage makeup on, you need to match that with your lips. Using matte and creamy lipsticks will give your lips more coverage to match the rest of your makeup.

Discovering your nude lipstick – Nude lipsticks are, of course, some of the favorites. It is a look that is soft and neutral and feels comfortable to wear, although finding the perfect nude lipstick can honestly be so hard to do. There are so many shades and colors of nudes that it can make up a whole color wheel. A tip I like to use is, with fair or medium skin tones, go two shades darker, and with darker skin tones, it doesn’t hurt to go two shades lighter. This will make sure your lips won’t disappear and you will have gorgeous nude lips!

Finding your perfect lipstick color is surely an adventure, but it can be an exciting one! Just like anything in makeup, don’t be afraid to experiment. If you feel like you can take over the world with red or even black lipstick, then go for it. After all, doing whatever feels right for you is what makeup is all about.
