5 ways to summer-proof your makeup

The Philippine Star

Have you ever experienced walking outside in the summer heat with a full face of makeup only to realize that the majority of it is melting off? No one likes it when sweat and makeup mix together, but what can we do about it? When it comes to things like smudged eye makeup and sticky lipstick, we all have gone through it. But don’t worry! Here are five ways of helping your makeup and skin handle the crazy Filipino heat.

1. Ease up on the makeup.

Wardrobe isn’t the only thing that changes during summer — your makeup routine does, too. The saying “less is more” is the golden rule for makeup during summer. The less you have on your face, the less likely it is to melt off.

If you can leave your house with only concealer as your base, then perfect! Summer is the best time to embrace our natural morena skin, because it is beautiful.  If you feel like you need more coverage, I would suggest using a tinted moisturizer or BB cream. These not only act as a lighter foundation but they have skincare benefits and SPF in them, which are crucial under the summer sun.

If tinted moisturizer or BB cream isn’t enough coverage for you, then pat on some powder foundation. Don’t apply too much; only apply to the parts that need extra coverage. Remember, less is more.

Waterproof your products: Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Seal converts your pencil and powder formulas into water- and smudge-proof products.

2. Waterproof your makeup.

When we say summer, the first thing that comes to mind is a vacation that involves swimming and tanning. To prevent eye makeup from smudging, use waterproof products. This will help you not look like a panda after swimming or walking around in the heat.

There is a wide variety of waterproof eye makeup, from waterproof liquid eyeliners to eye pencils and even cream shadows. Here’s a tip: If you are after a softer look, line your eyes with waterproof eyeliner pencil, then spread it out using a brush. This will give it a softer shadow effect that won’t budge no matter what you do. If you can’t be bothered buying all these waterproof products, Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Seal is a liquid formula that converts your pencil and powder formulas into water- and smudge-proof products.

3. Use cream eye shadows and cream blushes.

Cream blush sticks are a must! Compared to powder blushes, they are easier to apply when your skin is hot and damp, and the best thing about them is that they last longer. When sweat and powder mix, it smudges and can seep into your wrinkles, emphasizing them even more. To combat this, opt for cream eye shadows, especially those in natural hues. When choosing a cream eye shadow, pick one that isn’t too thick so that it won’t crease. Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadows are great because they are so easy to blend and stay put because of their thin consistency. Simply apply all over the eyelid using your finger, then voila! It will look blended with little to no effort at all. If you still want to use your powder eye shadows, apply an eyelid primer before the shadow and it will stay put. One product I would recommend is Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Poison.

4. Blot it out.

The best way to convert the shine on your face into a radiant glow is using oil-blotting sheets to absorb the excess oil on your face. The best thing about these sheets is that they are inexpensive and can reduce oil without ruining your makeup. Instead of looking sweaty, you’ll look luminous!

5. Don’t forget SPF.

I cannot stress enough how important having sun protection is! Leaving your house and doing your daily schedule can already take a toll on your skin because of sun exposure. Protect your skin by using products with SPF. You don’t have to use thick, sticky sunblock on your face; instead, use BB creams, primers, and tinted moisturizers that have an SPF of at least 15. These products include ingredients like zinc oxide, Avobenzone and Ecamsule that give long-lasting protection from the sun.
