Chanel channels the young, hip LA vibe

CULTURE VULTURE - Therese Jamora-Garceau - The Philippine Star

With the 88th Academy Awards coming soon, all the world’s eyes are focused on Hollywood and who will bring home the Oscar.

Chanel channels the City of Angels’ hip, youthful vibe with its spring/summer makeup collection LA Sunrise.

“It’s all about super-playful and flamboyant colors inspired by the morning light,” says Francesca Sy, brand  manager for Chanel Fragrance and Beauty at Rustan’s.

The star of the collection is undoubtedly Sunkiss Ribbon, a Creation Exclusive that interlaces tequila shades of pink, orange and bronze with an embossed ribbon pattern.

“It’s a light-diffusing blush that you can also use all over your face,” Sy says. When swirled together with the enclosed brush, it imparts a peachy, beach-y glow (shades of Venice Beach).

Eye shadows and liners are in vivid blues, greens and purples that are easier to wear than they look. Shade your eyes with the shimmery nude tones first then use blue or green as an accent in the crease or outer corners. Very Katy Perry, according to the Chanel peeps.

I love the Le Volume mascara in purple, which is dark enough to thicken lashes while simultaneously making them conversation pieces, as in, “Hey, are your eyelashes purple?”

Since the colors of the collection are so bright, the three Rouge Coco Shine lipsticks are sheer, more like balms with pink, orange and raspberry tints.

Another favorite is the nail polish Sunrise Trip, a purple-blue hybrid whose color payoff is an inky violet gloss on the nails.

The Foundation For A Healthy Glow

Three years ago Chanel launched its Les Beiges powder, and since then it’s become an iconic product for the brand. To complement it Chanel launched Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation SPF 25, and “ever since it arrived in the office, it’s converted everyone,” enthuses Sy.

Healthy Glow is so good even young women who don’t like wearing liquid foundation are raving about it.

“It’s the perfect balance between a matte, rosy and dewy effect,” says Joey Ermita, Chanel’s assistant brand manager. “What’s good is if you’re not a fan of using brushes, you can use your fingers with one or two pumps.”

“It’s really for women on the go, so we call it your ‘outdoor makeup,’” Sy adds. “If you’re going for a sun-kissed look, you can go a shade darker; if you want a more luminous effect, you can go a shade lighter than your skin tone.”

In addition, Healthy Glow contains hyaluronic acid to moisturize skin throughout the day. That, plus sun protection, plus resistance to sweat and oil, plus a fresh, luminous glow? No wonder it’s become everyone’s favorite foundation.

Two Anti-Aging Divas

Haven’t gotten any sleep but want to look like you’ve had a full eight hours? Chanel has just launched two “anti-aging divas” from the house’s most premium skincare line, Sublimage.

To wit, Sublimage La Crème has sold almost a jar a minute, totaling 1.6 million jars since it was introduced 10 years ago.

This bestselling La Crème has been reformulated to be even more effective, with Vanilla Planifolia from Madagascar as the active ingredient.

“Sublimage targets a range of anti-aging benefits that will help regenerate your skin,” says Sy. These include hydration, protection, radiance, firmness, elasticity, anti-wrinkling, evenness, plumping, and reducing the visibility of pores.

“Now, it comes in two finishes: One is Texture Supreme for dry, dehydrated skin, and another is Texture Fine for oily and combination skin.”

The well-rested look of a full eight hours? Check.

A Chance For Travel And Hair

Last year, Chanel launched Chance Eau Vive, a fresh floral wrapped in zesty and woody notes. This year, they’re launching a 35-ml version of the fragrance as well as a hair mist — a boon to travelers and those who like to spritz scent on their hair.

“It’s non-drying, and a pet peeve of some girls is when you smell like food from a restaurant, so this is what you spray,” notes Ermita.

Chanel also has hair-mist versions of No. 5, Allure and the other Chance scents.
