A killer lip and a hint of cheek tint for Laneway Festival

STYLE S.O.S. - The Philippine Star

HI, REGINA!

I read you’re going to Laneway in Singapore this weekend. What makeup would you suggest to wear to a festival like that? I want to look good, but I also want it to last the whole afternoon and night.

KIT

For one, I would skip foundation if possible. The thought of having makeup — no matter how fine a layer — on my face for well over 12 hours scares me, and if sweat is going to be happening (and it will), I don’t want anything covering up my pores. I don’t want to run the risk of having all of my paint dripping off, either. So, no foundation.

When gearing up for what looks like a long night out, I always end up deciding between just two things: a bold smoky eye and a bold lip. However, unless your smoky eye is tried and tested and guaranteed to survive without smudging, I would advise against that. Go for the lipstick instead, because (A) your lips don’t sweat, and (B) if your lipstick comes off, it’s totally easy to reapply, no mirror necessary.

Line your eyes a little if you need to, with a brown pencil that will still look deliberate if it gets a little smudged, and top your lashes with two coats of waterproof mascara for extra definition, but all you really need is a lot of sunscreen (which will be easy to reapply because you don’t have any foundation off, and believe me, you’re going to need to reapply), cleaned up and defined eyebrows, a hint of cheek tint, and a killer lip.

See you at Laneway!

So light, so right makeup brushes

DEAR RISSA,

I’m cleaning out my kikay kit. I need new makeup brushes. What do you recommend?

SIERRA

It’s nice to start fresh. Whether in your wardrobe or your makeup kit, editing is key so you retain key pieces that work best for you.

For my makeup kit, I can’t live without the Charm Double Duty Makeup brush set which features dual-ended brushes (P1,599 only, available online via beauty-and-minerals.myshopify.com). I wish they invented this long ago! All made from vegan, 100% cruelty-free bristles, the set contains the nine most useful kinds of makeup brushes any woman will need: powder + blush brush duo, liquid foundation + concealer brush duo, eyeshadow + blending brush duo, angled eyeshadow + pencil point brush duo, and a lip brush. It’s like nine brushes that take up the space of just four brushes!

I’ve been using them for months already and they’ve stayed incredibly soft on the skin, even after countless washes. They’ve never shed on me, too. They’re as soft as my branded brushes but at a more reasonable price. The quality of the brushes is so good that they pick up the right amount of product and blend makeup so flawlessly. Above all, I adore them so much because they’re the perfect space savers and keep my makeup kit light.

Shawls are forever

DEAR LUCY,

Are shawls passe already? I still love them and I have quite a collection, but my friends say I should just switch to jackets.

EDITH

I do not think shawls will ever be passe. I have always felt they are a lovely and elegant way to cover up and keep warm. For instance, in a wedding when there is need to cover up, I would much rather use a cashmere shawl in the same color as my gown rather than wear a jacket. When you travel, it is elegant and there is something very feminine and classy about how you can just drape it nonchalantly  over the shoulders or around the neck.
