Melissa jellies it up with Karl Lagerfeld, Vivienne Westwood

#NOFILTER - Chonx Tibajia - The Philippine Star

Anyone who’s ever owned a pair of Melissa shoes has most likely worn them to bits — if that’s even possible. My well-loved pair of Vivienne Westwood wedges has seen many parties but it shows no signs of wear, and it still has that powdery Melissa scent that fills my luggage everytime I pack them for a trip. For these reasons, among many others, Melissa has earned its place in the woman’s closet as the go-to shoe for when you need to look polished, but also incredibly comfortable.

One of the world’s most recognizable footwear brands, you’d know a Melissa from a mile away. If you can’t smell it, you’d be able to see it — no other brand of “jelly” shoes is as well made. Its seams and ridges are clean. It has a muted shine that doesn’t look plasticky. It doesn’t squeak or make any funny noises as you walk. It packs light and travels well. And yeah, it makes everything else inside your bag smell nice.

Melissa aptly marked its 35th anniversary with a travel-inspired event held at the Atrium of SM Aura in Bonifacio Global City. The event showcased its groundbreaking collaborations with British tastemaker Vivienne Westwood, luxury style expert Karl Lagerfeld, and cutting-edge Brazilian design duo the Campana Brothers, to the novel creations of the couture world’s latest toast, Jason Wu on the runway.

The runway took guests, including host Nikki Gil, and stylish celebrities like Daphne Osena, Andi Manzano, Maggie Wilson-Consunji, Kelly Misa, Nicole Andersson, Shamcey Supsup and Rissa Mananquil-Trillo — all dressed in their best jetsetter outfits — to Paris, London, New York and Brazil through the new Melissa collections.

Brazil featured a laid-back, colorful vibe with Melissa open-toe flats and sandals. Paris, the City of Light and romance, featured dainty flats in muted colors. New York showed a lot of tough-girl, no-nonesense attitude with heels that go from office to party. And finally, London showcased its famous punk-rock style with booties, wedges, and platform sandals.
