Patis Tesoro: The modern woman’s byword for Filipiniana

PERSONAL CHOICE - Frannie Jacinto - The Philippine Star

Patis Pamintuan Tesoro has been the modern-day woman’s byword for Filipiniana dresses. Known as the “Grande Dame of Philippine Fashion,” Patis’ love of everything Filipino is evident in her work, which uses intricately embroidered piña, abaca, Mindanao silk and other indigenous hand-woven fabrics.  Because of this, she has helped local weavers resurrect an almost-forgotten skill and made the younger generation aware of our beautiful craftsmanship — something we should all be proud of.

Brides throughout the decades have flocked to her San Juan atelier for their altar dates, knowing that when they order a gown, it will be delivered on time and with a perfect fit.

During my visit a decade ago, she noticed that a gown’s beading was not up to her standards and politely requested her bordadora (beader) to redo the work so it would stand out and have a richer, layered look. It was then that I realized that Patis gave equal importance to creativity and top quality — they should always go hand in hand when it comes to making beautiful clothes.

In her holiday 2014/15 collection for Rustan’s, the well-attended affair proved that Patis’ touch is a standout.

Modern-style bohemian Filipiniana never looked better and the best part is that Patis’ designs can suit women of all ages and sizes. Her off-the-rack clothes made with haute couture craftsmanship are available at Rustan’s Makati and Shangri-La.
