All for art and Luna for Freeway

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -Freeway launches a fusion of nationalism and fashion into an awe-inspiring collection with its first-ever Filipino Masters Series showcasing the works of the legendary Juan Luna. He was the first master who shaped Philippine art history.

Juan Luna is considered one of the greatest Filipino artists in Philippine history. He was mostly known for his works as being dramatic and dynamic, focusing on romanticism and realism styles of art. In 1877, Luna traveled to Europe to continue his studies and enrolled at Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. It was in 1881 when he received his first major achievement as an artist by winning a silver medal at the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Demonstration of Fine Arts) with his work â€œThe Death of Cleopatra.” Juan Luna kept on impressing the European and Filipino society through the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes with outstanding works such as the â€œSpoliarium” which won gold in 1884 and â€œBattle at Lepanto” in 1887. Juan Luna’s other popular works are â€œThe Happy Beauty and the Blind Slave,” “Tampuhan,” “Mestiza Lady at her Dresser” and â€œRoman Ladies.” Today, several of his works can be found in esteemed museums in the Philippines such as the Lopez Museum and National Museum.

Freeway presents some of Luna’s works through a collection consisting of casual knit tops, corporate tops, jumpsuit and tailored dresses for ladies, plus a few men’s graphic tees.

Ranging from casual to semi-formal, the pieces consist of different styles and trends that the modern Filipina will surely love to wear. The collection — with its interesting mix of fabrics ranging from techno knits, stretch georgettes, satinized twills and stretch poplins — has been perfected to flatter the figure. All the pieces use comfortable stretch fabric. As for the color palette, the collection uses a balance of warm and dark tones such as brown, black, dark blue mixed with pops of bright colors such as red, yellow and more.

The prints translated onto these pieces are a presentation of some Luna’s works including â€œEl Flautista,” “I am Cold,” “Una Dama Francesca,” “España y Filipinas,” “Fencing Positions,” “Various Subjects” and “A Roman.” And with the Juan Luna collection, Freeway continues to revolutionize the meaning of “fashionalism” and instill in the hearts of many Filipinos their culture and heritage.

Freeway’s Juan Luna collection also offers unique and memorable gift items such as the popular canvas printed shopping bags, coin trays, iPhone cases and more.
