Palawan band bags Muziklaban 2018, Ely Buendia sings Eraserheads songs

MANILA, Philippines — An alternative-reggae band from Puerto Princesa, Palawan has been hailed as the grand champion of the 19th edition of Red Horse Beer’s Pambansang Muziklaban held at the Metrowalk’s Open Parking Grounds in Ortigas, Pasig.
South Luzon’s pride Woopis, whose members include vocalist and guitarist Soy Lanzanas, guitarist Jacob Carlos, bassist Jiboy Betita and drummer Toting Penaflor, amazed the crowd and the judges with their original songs.
As the champion, the band will receive a cash prize of P500,000 tax free, a band start-up support worth P300,000, a music video album production, an endorsement contract with guaranteed gigs worth P200,000, P25,000 worth of cash, apparel and accessories, and performance at the Rakrakan Festival next month.
Influenced by Eraserheads, Yano, Sugarfree, Urbandub, Coldplay and Mayonaise, Woopis is a group that was constituted in 2008 and from then on created fair number of original songs, which the band performs in different big events around Palawan and Puerto Princesa City.

Like in previous years, the road to rock stardom became more special for the aspiring "rakistas" as their idol bands Slapshock, Razorback, Wilabaliw, Greyhoundz, Kjwan, Valley of Chrome, Typecast, Mayonaise and Ely Buendia also performed that night.
Ely and his full band once again make the audience's heart skip a beat with their new rendition of Eraserheads’ classic songs “Magasin,” “Alapaap,” “Pare Ko,” “Spolarium,” and “Ligaya,” among others.
Marc Abaya of Kjwan stole the show as he stage-dived into the audience, making the crowd pass him in the mosh pit.
Mayonnaise, winner of the 2004 Muziklaban, reminisced the time when they were still a contestant at the competition and now, they are among the top bands in the country. They serenaded the crowd with their songs “Bakit Part 2,” and “Jopay,” but they made the audience run wild with their rendition of Teeth’s classic “Laklak.”
Other finalists in the competition includes Visayas’ Sinaphatra, Mindanao’s Redeemed by the Blood, North Luzon’s Talim and Metro Manila’s Luminus.
