Magical Bones: From Madonna’s dancer to world’s best hip-hop magician

MANILA, Philippines — How is it working with Madonna and The Black Eyed Peas?

According to South London street conjurer and break-dancing master Magical Bones, he never felt different from the artists he has worked in live performances and music videos before, even if they are multiple Grammy award winners like the "Queen of Pop" and The Black Eyed Peas, which includes Filipino singer Apl de Ap.

“It’s a balance on set and we were made to feel all equal as artists,” he told Philstar.com during a recent press conference.

Throughout his career as a street dancer, Magical Bones has also met Filipino artists and he finds them “amazing and very talented.”

He has also heard about the Philippines’ reputation as a country full of talented musical performers.

Thus, this Christmas, Bones is excited to share his sleight-of-hand skills at the upcoming “Impossible” magic show in Manila from December 25 to January 3.

“I’m really looking forward to Christmas in the Philippines because it’s going to be hot and it’s really cold in the UK. I’m going to enjoy the season in the sun, and it’s going to be a very festive season here. I’m looking forward to sharing it with Filipinos,” he said.

Fresh from its record-breaking second summer in London's West End, ”Impossible” features six of the world’s most mind-blowing magical acts that fuse death-defying stunts, technological trickery, grand stage illusions and close-up magic in a fast-paced breath-taking performance.

According to Magical Bones, “Impossible” started two to three years ago in the UK.

“What makes it standout is the variety and we take you on a journey, so you get to experience different types of magic. We give you a little bit of history, so you can appreciate the evolution of magic. The performance is truly, truly world-class. We have the best performers in the world. Everyone’s unique. You don’t see those kinds of acts anywhere else in the world,” he assured.

He recalled that his transition from dancing to becoming a magician has been a natural progression as he has been performing magic tricks even when he dances. In fact, he said, he once showed Madonna a trick in a party, and she really enjoyed it.

As a magician, Magical Bones has been inspired by other street magicians in the UK like David Blaine. He has also been motivated by Michael Jackson, so he practiced with the late King of Pop’s songs playing in the background.

In ”Impossible,”  Magical Bones infuses street magic with hip-hop and music, including in his must-see signature trick, “Crunchy.”  

He shared that takes him years to perfect a trick. Nowadays, he finds it harder to become a magician because “people Google you and try to figure out how you did your stuff.”

Hence, to become a magician is really all about hard work and not mastering spells and calling spirits.

"The magic is in the feeling of wonder and astonishment," Bones enthused. “It’s all about practice, hard work and determination; sitting hours in front of a mirror...Magic is very visual. You don’t have to earn some degree. Everyone can do magic. Everybody takes part in magic.”

What makes him the world’s best hip-hop magician?

“I’m the best because I might be the world’s only hip-hop magician,” he said with a laugh.
