MANILA, Philippines — Kapamilya actor Zanjoe Marudo is now in New York City to attend the prestigious International Emmy Awards on Monday.

Zanjoe was nominated in the Best Performance by an Actor category for his performance in “MMK’s” episode titled “Anino.” He competed against actors Julio Andrade (Brazil), Kenneth Branagh (United Kingdom), and Kad Merad (France).

Although the award eventually went to UK's Branagh, Zanjoe received a medal for being nominated. In his Instagram posts, the actor proudly showed off the medal.

As a nominee, Zanjoe also got to walk on the red carpet together with international stars from all over the world.

“I am very excited and ‘kinikilig’ because finally I get to experience one of the highlights of my career,” said Zanjoe. “Thank you so much ABS-CBN for giving me the opportunity.”

In the “MMK” epiode, Zanjoe played the role of a hardworking father, who later on suffered schizophrenia. For him, his portrayal was his way of helping families who has someone dealing with the illness.

“It’s a very heavy role and I accepted it to challenge myself as an actor. I think the episode helped create more understanding for people with schizophrenia and how hard the situation is for them and even their families.”

Zanjoe, together with “MMK” production manager Roda Dela Cerna, attended iEmmys functions and panel interviews before the red carpet and gala night on Monday at the Hilton.

Zanjoe was among the 44 nominees across 11 categories and 18 countries in this year’s awards. If he wons, he could have been the first Filipino actor to bag the coveted award.

Last year, fellow Star Magic artist Jodi Sta. Maria also got an international Emmy nomination in the Best Performance by an Actress category for her portrayal as Amor Powers in the hit drama “Pangako Sa’Yo.” Primetime series “Bridges of Love,” meanwhile, was nominated in the Best Telenovela category.

ABS-CBN previously scored International Emmy Awards nominations for “Precious Hearts Romances Presents: Impostor” (Best Telenovela) in 2011, “Dahil May Isang Ikaw” (Best Telenovela) and Sid Lucero in “Dahil May Isang Ikaw” (Best Actor) in 2010, and “Kahit Isang Saglit” (Best Telenovela) and Angel Locsin in “Lobo” (Best Actress) in 2009.
