#KeepGoing: Celebrities shower love for #WorldMentalHealthDay

James Reid and Nadine Lustre, also known as JaDine, are believed to have started the campaign against suicide and depression. Pilipino Star Ngayon/File

MANILA, Philippines — Depression, said the World Health Organization, “will be the most common single cause of disability in both developed and developing countries by 2020.”

Thus, to mark the commemoration of World Health Mental Day on October 10, celebrities have circulated a black and white picture of a giant semicolon with a hashtag, #KeepGoing.

Since a semicolon encourages one to continue reading the sentence, it has been used to symbolize the giving of love and hope to those struggling with mental health issues.

#KeepGoing and #WorldMentalHealthDay are now among those top trending on Twitter.

The trend, according to music channel Myx, was started by "It's Showtime" host Nadine Lustre to raise awareness about suicide prevention due to depression. She is backed by boyfriend and recording star James Reid.

The campaign comes after recent events involving Joey de Leon, host of the rival noontime show "Eat Bulaga!," making a remark deemed "insensitive" about depression. De Leon was slammed by other celebrities, including co-host Maine Mendoza, actress Kisses Delavin, and beauty queen Mariel De Leon.

Mariel also drew flak on social media for saying "ew" to her and Joey sharing the same surname. Joey has since apologized for the remark, while Mariel has since deleted the Twitter post. Her mom, Sandy Andolong, apologized for her daughter.

Actress and rockstar Arci Munoz, who has been bashed in social media for her alleged plastic surgery, posted the semicolon in support of those who might be struggling from depression due to to social media bashing or other causes.

In her Twitter account, celebrity athlete and TV host Gretchen Ho said: "Light up the dark for someone ; whenever you can."

Likewise, TV host Bianca Gonzalez advised those experiencing depression: "You can overcome this. You are not alone."

Award-winning singer-actor Gary Valenciano also expressed his support for the cause by posting the image on his Instagram account.

According to the New York Post, millennials “are more depressed at work than any generation,” and young women “are particularly at risk.”

As a result, The New York Times added that suicide “surges to a 30-year high” in the US, backed by a Washington Post report that said, “US suicide rate has risen sharply in the 21st century.”

“Optimism is much needed now because there are so many things happening in social media now that make children get depressed. Depression is now rampant globally,” explained Dr. Aurorita Roldan, University of the Philippines College of Home Economics Dean and Professor on family life and child development.
