MANILA, Philippines — Seven years since their last soap opera together, actors Gerald Anderson and Kim Chiu reunite in a TV series that debuted on ABS-CBN last Monday, “Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin.”

In a recent press conference for the show, Kim admitted that reuniting with her ex-boyfriend for a project was awkward at first.

“’Syempre, n’ung una, awkward kasi ‘di naman kami super friends nito eh (Gerald). Hi, hello lang kami sa ‘ASAP.’ Nakakatawa na awkward din sa mga taong kaharap namin kasi alam nila ‘yung mga nangyaring ‘di maganda,” she shared.

She is happy, however, that a lot of things changed since they parted and everything was for the better.

“Since then, nag-mature, natuto na kami. Mas naging professional. I’m happy nangyari po ‘yung mga ‘yun n’ung mga bata pa kami,” Kim maintained. “’Di ka magiging fully happy kung ‘di ka magpapatawad. Ikaw din ang mahihirapan. Iiwas ka, magagalit ka, magsasabi ka ng masama, so why not just forgive?”

Gerald is also thankful to be given another chance to work with Kim and to revive their love team, Kimerald.

“Hindi po sa miss, but grateful. We’ve known each other since PBB (“Pinoy Big Brother”). She was right there by my side. Kung ang career ko ay isang bahay, si Kim po ang foundation,” he enthused.

“Masaya lang ako na nagkaroon ng ganitong oportunidad because I started my career with Kim. I thank God for the opportunity.”

He discovered that Kim is still the same “in a good way.”

“Ang nakakatawa pa nga, iba ang energy n’ya ngayon. Minsan, kailangan kong lumayo kasi sobrang nakakahawa ang energy n’ya. It’s great to work with her determination and passion. Dati pang grabe ang determination n’ya, pero ngayon lang ako nakakita ng walang tulog sa shooting na dumeretso sa 21k (marathon)!”

If in their past teleseryes together, his Tagalog was so bad that it took him 20 to 35 takes per scene, today, he took note how much his colloquial tongue has improved.

In “Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin,” Kim plays Bianca Agbayani, who never stops working for her family. Gerald, meanwhile, essays the role of Gabriel, a “lola’s boy” who works hard for his family and studies.

Before “Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin,” Kimerald worked together for the teleseryes “Sana Maulit Muli,” “My Girl,” “Your Song,” “Tayong Dalawa” and “Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo.”

“Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin” also marks the pair’s reunion with their “third wheel,” Jake Cuenca, who was with Kimerald in “Sana Maulit Muli” and “Tayong Dalawa.”

Since then, Kim noticed how much Gerald has changed.

“Iba ‘yung maturity. Lagi s’yang naka-actor’s cue,” Kim giggled. “Ngayon, tahimik na s’ya. Lagi na s’yang naka-hybernation. Siguro, sign of aging!”
