Luigi wants council nod to waive permit for trikes

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Mandaue City Mayor Gabriel Quisumbing wants the City Council to decide on the request for business permit exemption from a group of tricycle drivers.

Quisumbing said he will endorse the request to the council for approval.

The tricycle operators and drivers in Mandaue City asked that they be exempted from the required business permit on top of the franchise. The drivers and operators made the request during a dialogue with Glenn Antigua, operations chief of the Traffic Enforcement Agency, last week.

TEAM conducted a dialogue with the tricycle drivers and operators in line with the city government’s plan to intensify the campaign against colorum operation. The city government is giving colorum operators until February 24 to register their tricycle units.

“I will endorse that in the council that we will waive that business permit requirement,” Quisumbing said.

According to him, he will support one hundred percent any move that will encourage tricycle operators to register.

The tricycle drivers and operators are complaining because they need to spend close to P4,000 to get a franchise and business permit.

Based on the city ordinance, the franchise costs P2,000 and P1,800 for the business permit.

Quisumbing said he will meet with all tricycle drivers next week to formally announce his decision whether or not to waive the business permit. (FREEMAN)
